\nNick Delf fs : Live Stream presented by Sou’wester Arts
\nhttp://www.mamabirdrecording co.com/nick-delffs
\nNick Delffs is a seeker. He’d never identif y himself that way. He’s unassuming and self-effacing\, careful to discuss song meanings and biographical details without indulgence or melodrama. D elffs cut his teeth playing basement shows in Portland a dozen years ago\, just before that city’s cover was irreversibly blown. It was a time when being musically ambitious meant impressing other local musicians. You were a joke\, in that world\, if you proclaimed yourself an artist or promoted your band with any zeal. So Delffs would probably find “seeker” a rather grandiose title.
\nBut Nick Delffs is\, in fact\, a seeker. He’s an old-school rustler of the human condition\; a tireless navigator of social and spiritual landscapes\; a genuinely curious and wide-eyed\, mankind-en thusiast. Soon after meeting him\, one gets the impression that Delffs cou ld be dropped in some far corner of the Earth and he’d not only survive\, but he’d make a lot of friends—maybe even start a new band. In both casual conversation and his songwriting\, Delffs gravitates to the universal. Th at’s his search. His life’s work is in the identification and removal of o ur shared illusions. And that is\, largely\, what Delffs writes songs abou t. Songs come to him when he’s “feeling detached from the world but totall y in love with it at the same time\,” he says. “Mostly they come when I am patient and I don’t need them or care about them too much.”
\nThey happen to be pretty catchy songs. Delffs first emerged in 2003 as the fron tman for the seminal Portland band The Shaky Hands\, known for their jangl y\, pulsing and introspective songs and their high-energy live shows. The band would sign to the venerable Kill Rock Stars imprint and tour internat ionally with bands like The Shins and Meat Puppets.
\nThe Shaky Hand s went on hiatus in 2011\, and the changes came fast and furious for Delff s. He released a stripped-down\, self-titled EP as Death Songs. He became a father. He relocated to Idaho. He took odd jobs and worked as a landscap er. All the while\, he was strengthening his musical chops by collaboratin g with artists like Luz Elena Mendoza (Y La Bamba) and Ali Clarys—both of whom play important roles on his new LP\, Redesign.
\nLivin g in Boise\, Delffs remained a beloved figure throughout the Northwest—tra veling often and moonlighting in friends’ touring bands. Slowly\, through collaboration and time off\, the pressure of being a full-time songwriter subsided and a thrilling new confidence emerged in Delffs’ own work.
\n“I like to disassociate myself with being a songwriter\,” he says. “I l ike to forget I even do it. In the past that would have freaked me out\, b ut I have a healthier relationship with my songs now. It’s less codependen t.”
\nRedesign is the first full-length album Delffs has ev er released under his own name. He first shed the Death Songs moniker in 2 015\, when he unceremoniously dropped a four-track EP of fantastic story-s ongs simply titled Home Recordings\, and last year Mama Bird rele ased Delffs’ reworking of the traditional English Christmas carol\, “As I Sat on a Sunny Bank”. But Redesign is a self-contained universe o f songs that play with themes that\, on the surface\, seem at odds with on e another: longing for nature (“Somewhere Wild”\, an ode to off-the-grid l iving) and learning to take responsibility (“Song for Aja”\, a sweet and p ercussive tune about Delffs’ now six-year-old son that recalls Cat Stevens and Paul Simon). Musically\, these themes are stitched together by the al bum’s warm\, organic production and Delffs’ playing—he’s behind every inst rument on the record—but Delffs also connects those seemingly disparate do ts under the heading of Redesign. Heading into wilderness provides the ins ight for dealing with life’s heaviness\; the responsibility of being a par ent is also an opportunity for endless imaginative self-exploration.
\nThe title track “Redesign” was written during a rafting trip in Eastern Oregon. “I couldn’t go for the full three days\, so I went for one day an d hiked back to my car alone\,” Delffs says. “It took maybe nine hours\, a nd I had no shoes\, and there were rattlesnakes. I took naps\, I sang in c aves. I felt like I let a lot of things go on that walk.”
\nA redesi gn means “to change out the parts of yourself that don’t work\, or don’t s erve anyone\,” Delffs explains. “And if you are changing and growing\, you r relationships have to as well. It seems like redesigning our relationshi p with the world—and staying open to change and curious about the future—i s more important now than ever.”
\nThis is what you can depend on fr om Nick Delffs. In a world of noise and madness\, he will use his music to try and scratch at something human and real. Something helpful. Nick Delf fs is a seeker. He shares his discoveries. Redesign is his greate st gift yet.

She works alongside her partner\, Mark Robertson\, who produces and engineers her records with homemade analog equipment in h is studio\, Field Electric. In November 2019\, she released her first full length record \, Sugarcane. Bend Source’s Isaac Biehl remarks that “Sugar cane is really the perfect name for this record— you can hear the sweetnes s in Ford’s tone as she beams through fuzzy and granular mix of synths and guitar. . . Ford finds herself hovering in a space somewhere between gara ge rock and bedroom pop\, stirring up what is quite a delightful mix to th e ear.” In the fall of 2020\, released a handful of acoustic songs titled All at Once\, recorded in the intimacy of her home during the lockdown of the pandemic.

\n“On “Shakey Kn ees\,” Weezy Ford introduces herself to the world through a wall of distor ted guitar and a shroud of vocal reverb. It’s a striking sound\, reminisce nt of the grimy rockabilly from her native North Carolina (think Flat Duo Jets with a hitch in its step). But the track isn’t without a few surprise s\, as Ford literally tap dances her way out of the song. It’s a risky and playful choice that ultimately pays off and leaves the listener wanting m ore.” – Jerad Walker\, OPB

Rolling Stone listed her as a s tandout performer at the 2019 AmericanaFest in Nashville\, writing “In a w eek of countless songsmiths showcasing their attempt at that exact type of singer-songwriter storytelling\, Tivel’s winding\, largely chorus-less ta les shined and shimmered.”[9] The ma gazine also named the lead single from The Question\, “Fenceline”\, a “song you need to know”.[10]
\nTivel was born in La Conner\, Washington and grew up in a musical family\, learning violin and fiddle as a child. After moving to Portland at age 18 \, she developed an interest in songwriting and began to write and perform her own material.[11] Many of her songs are vignettes about the lives and struggles of ordinary people\; sh e said in an interview “I’m drawn over and over to the small stories of pe ople (myself included) just trying to get by\, to do a little better\, to feel some sort of beauty in an ugly world.”[ 12] Tivel’s songs are often somber in tone as she has said that she “just [doesn’t] trust happy songs as much”.[13]

\nOver the span of her career\, Jolie Holland has knotted together a c entury of American song—jazz\, blues\, soul\, rock and roll—into some stew that is impossible to categorize with any conventional critical terminolo gy. This is her burden and her gift\, to know all of these American songs of the last ten decades in her head and her heart\, and to have to wrestle with their legacy. She dives straight to the pathos of a song the way the very greatest singers\, singers like Mavis Staples\, or Al Green\, or Ski p James\, or Tom Waits do. Upon first encounter her songs seem challenging \, perhaps unsettling at times\, but as so many poets and rockers have sho wn us (from Dante Alighieri to William Blake to Sylvia Plath to Patti Smit h to Nick Cave to Mark E. Smith) that’s where the beauty lies. As evident on her first recordings\, Holland apparently has no fear of the truth\, an d there is no emotional core that she cannot reach in song. In fact she th rives on the red hot center of a musical composition\, in all its strange and brutal detail. Note how easily the line “I’ve been taken outside and I ’ve been brutalized” trips off her tongue in Joe Tex’s “The Love You Save. ”
\n\n
Which brings us to Wine Dark Sea. Astute listeners to Holland’s work can recognize how her writing over the years has deepened\, matured\, become the songwriting of a wise\, worldly adult\, not just of a rambler across the American latitudes\, but to understand this is still no preparation for the sonic assault\, the unprecedented confidence and me rciless brilliance of Wine Dark Sea which yokes the New York underground t o American song in a way that has rarely been attempted since White Light/ White Heat by the Velvet Underground. Yes\, the classic Holland lyrical co ncerns are evident in songs like “Palm Wine Drunkard\,” and “St. Dymphna\, ” and “Out on the Wine Dark Sea\,” all of which mix a density of literatur e and poetry to brutalities of romantic love\, to the fragmentation of sel f and narrator in a torrent of loss and grief\, but this tells us nothing about the band Holland has assembled and leads to express her present visi on. Two drummers\, sometimes as many as three or four electric guitars\, h orns of a sort that come out of free jazz and the No Wave scene as much as they come from soul music\, and a refreshing need\, on Holland’s part\, t o sing out at the extreme of her range\, above the squalling insatiable lu llaby of the thing. And\, just when you think you know how to listen to mu ltiple incendiary devices as occasionally rise up out of the category five of it all—guitar playing that makes Zuma or On the Beach sound somewhat r estrained—there are the ballads: graceful\, melancholy\, wistful. There ha s been no album of the recent decade with quite this sonic ambition\, with quite this command of what a rock and roll song is and ought to be\, but Wine Dark Sea is all of that\, with a little bit of Homer and Maya Deren m ixed in too.
\n\n
Jolie Holland has a Desperation to tell Now . And she has called on deep\, dark forces to get there. It’s always a ple asure to hear a musician come to a new precipice in her output\, where gre at skills and great courage are required to rise to the occasion. Wine Dar k Sea is the album of a lifetime\, with a lifetime of work in it.

\nNick Delffs is a seeker. He’d never identify himself that way. He’s unassuming and self-effacing\, care ful to discuss song meanings and biographical details without indulgence o r melodrama. Delffs cut his teeth playing basement shows in Portland a doz en years ago\, just before that city’s cover was irreversibly blown. It wa s a time when being musically ambitious meant impressing other local music ians. You were a joke\, in that world\, if you proclaimed yourself an arti st or promoted your band with any zeal. So Delffs would probably find “see ker” a rather grandiose title.

\n“We’re processing a l
ot of things going on in our world right now\,” reflects Kati Clab
orn during a respite from touring. Along with her partner Luke Ydstie\, Claborn is striving to make sense of the present b
y looking to the past in The Hackles’ upcoming album\, A Dobtrich Did As A Dobritch Should\, out on
Ydstie and Claborn fir st met in Portland in the mid-2000s after Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowsk i of Blind Pilot recruited additional band members to fle sh out the band. Still members of Blind Pilot today\, Ydstie and Claborn f irst met at these initial band practices\, and now live in Astoria\, Orego n with their five-year-old daughter. After discovering how well each of th eir creative processes’ enrich one another’s\, Ydstie and Claborn decided to form their own musical project. “I think one of the reasons why it’s so successful when Luke and I write together is that we feel very safe and o pen\,” says Claborn. “Both of us feel like we can throw out any idea and i t’s okay. We can try anything.” Co-producer Adam Selzer e xpands this environment of experimentation. “Going into the mixing process \, we gave Adam free reign to do whatever he wanted\, and he made a lot of interesting mixing choices and added effects that had a huge effect on ho w the album turned out.”
\nThough The Hackles’ upcoming record title might at first seem imbued in mystery\, the ec centric name is a nod to the life and death of 20th century Bulgarian circ us impresario\, Al Dobritch\, who appears most markedly in “And The Show G oes On.” The chief producer of famed Circus Circus Casino in Las Vegas\, D obritch made a name for himself after escaping World War II and settling i n America\, eventually rubbing elbows with celebrities and marrying film s tar Rusty Allen. His gilded life came to a dark end when he was charged wi th kidnapping and\, soon after\, jumped to his death on the Las Vegas stri p. “Dobritch went through so many crazy things in his life\,” says Claborn \, “And though he was able to persevere and create this incredible life\, it goes to show that at the end\, there are sometimes things you can’t con trol.”
\nThe interwoven notions of predestined fate\, as we ll as the hopeful antithesis of regaining power over one’s personal circum stances\, stream throughout The Hackles’ upcoming release \, complemented by the album’s serene sound. The duo’s propensity for glow ing chords shines\, though it soon becomes apparent that the expert delica cy of the couple’s guitar work only barely contains the graceful\, mountin g power prevalent in the meeting of Claborn and Ydstie’s voices. Similar t o the tug-of-war stories that Claborn and Ydstie portray\, the dynamism of the duo’s vocals never overpowers the tranquility of the chords below. In stead\, both strengths support and enhance one another. “There’s a thread going through the album about the things that control us in our lives and the things that we’re able to take back\,” surmises Claborn\, “It’s about the impact of inevitability\, the webs you can weave\, and the webs that w eave you.”

“I’m ki nd of a junkie for sad songs and ballads\,” says Bob Sumner\, the younger half of Vancouver-based Americana outfit The Sumner Brothers. “As a teenag er most of my friends were into hip-hop\, but I felt pretty out of place r olling around suburban White Rock\, British Columbia\, pumping gangster ra p.” Sitting in his room with his headphones on\, Sumner compiled downheart ed mixtapes pulling together the more introspective songs of CCR\, The Ban d\, Led Zeppelin\, Emmylou Harris. As he began writing his own songs\, thi s innate attentiveness to songcraft and emotional understanding became a h allmark of Sumner’s songwriting and aesthetic. In the years since\, he’s r eleased five albums with The Sumner Brothers\, blending sounds as disparat e as Neil Young and The Dead Kennedys\, but Bob Sumner’s Wasted Love Songs (out January 25) presents Sumner back in the bedroom\, attentive to the q uieter recordings of his formative years. Helmed by the gentle intentional ity of Sumner’s voice and lyricism\, this rare debut from a songwriting ve teran expresses the timeless quality found in the melancholy of Townes Van Zandt\, the atmospheric momentum of Tom Petty\, and the prophetic restles sness of Bruce Springsteen.
\nThe culmination of Sumner’s c reative intention and sensitivity\, Wasted Love Songs is born out of an en twining of musical influences spanning decades. With his brother Brian\, h e’s written and played finely tuned songs erected at the borders of countr y and rock and roll for nearly 15 years\, making the Sumner family name sy nonymous with the alternative folk and country music scenes throughout the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada. In the midst of The Sumner Brothers ’ growing orientation toward rock and roll in recent years\, Bob Sumner fe lt the draw toward his balladic roots. “I had all these ballads and folk s ongs that worked really well together\,” he says. “I wanted to make an alb um someone could just put on and unfold into.”

The singer-songwriter’s debut solo LP\, Found In The Smoke\, is an i ntimate rummage through his past: it weds the freewheeling experimental ae sthetics of his beloved indie band\, From Indian Lakes\, with the music tr aditions on which he was reared while growing up in a trailer on an acreag e in rural northern California. The result is an emo-meets-outlaw American a love letter—like Justin Vernon and Townes Van Zandt locked in a cabin in the Sierra Nevada for months—with phosphorescent synths\, hushed vocals\, and hardy guitar work.

Georgia-bred\, Nashville-based son gwriter Kristina Murray plays Americana and country music rooted and steep ed in troubadour storytelling\, southern-rock grit and the footsteps of co untry queens of yesteryear. Kristina’s songwriting springs from a deep and personal desire to share her truth\, her opinions and convictions\, and t he simple joys and tragedies of life. Her songs adhere to the adage “write what you know\,” and her delivery is as fluid\, rhythmic\, and steady as her right hand on her 1963 J-45\, a beloved companion whom she endearingly calls Lil’ Sister in a nod to an early musical hero\, one Elvis Presley.< /p>\n
Kristina currently lives in Nashville\, where she is active in the underground independent country and Americana music scene t hat pays homage to the jangle of an acoustic guitar\, the sting of a Telec aster\, tight harmonies and a walking bassline—the sweat and grime and hea rtache of country legends—rather than\, say\, the synth and drum machine o f contemporary pop country. One listen and you’ll believe every word that drips from her honky-tonk hewn\, honeyed vocal style.
\nReleased on her own label\, Loud Magnolia Records\, her second full length album\, Southern Ambrosia conveys a fier ce and witty perspective on southernisms\, hard truths\, heartbreak\, and the eternal magical mystery and saving grace of melody\, music and song. p> DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20220312T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20220312T213000 LOCATION:The Sou'wester @ 3728 J Pl\, Seaview\, WA 98644 SEQUENCE:0 SUMMARY:Todd Day Wait + Kristina Murray : Presented by Sou’wester Arts URL:https://www.souwesterlodge.com/event/todd-day-wait-kristina-murray-pres ented-by-souwester-arts/ X-COST-TYPE:free X-WP-IMAGES-URL:thumbnail\;https://www.souwesterlodge.com/wp-content/upload s/2022/01/TODD_KRISTINA_LONG-150x150.png\;150\;150\;1\,medium\;https://www .souwesterlodge.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/TODD_KRISTINA_LONG-300x169. png\;300\;169\;1\,large\;https://www.souwesterlodge.com/wp-content/uploads /2022/01/TODD_KRISTINA_LONG-425x239.png\;425\;239\;1\,full\;https://www.so uwesterlodge.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/TODD_KRISTINA_LONG.png\;1500\; 844\; END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:ai1ec-13590@www.souwesterlodge.com DTSTAMP:20240329T115520Z CATEGORIES;LANGUAGE=en-US:live stream\,wellness\,music\,community CONTACT: DESCRIPTION:

Arran Fagan : Presented by Sou’wester Arts
\nArran Fagan is a folk musician based in Portland\, OR. A product of the grassroots music m ovement of Southern Oregon\, Arran has spent the greater part of his life pursuing music\, creating wistful and evocative songs that explore themes beyond his age – love\, loss\, divorce\, and the endless passage of time.< /p>\n
Often compared to ar tists like Joan Shelly\, Josh Ritter\, and Nathaniel Rateliff\, Arran Fagan has been working his way into the northwest folk scene for some time \, getting his start playing countless coffee shops and house shows for co llege classmates and eventually opening for northwest favorites like Leif Vo llebekk\, HorseFeathers\, Kris Orlowski\, and Jeffrey Marti n. Praised for his introspective lyrics and vivid storytelling\, Arran has garnered a following in his native Oregon with his uncanny ability to weave the personal and universal.
\nIn 2015\, Arran recruited fellow University of Portland students Jack Pfeffer and Jonathan Wiley\, and the three worked to perfect a sparse\, melodic sound influenc ed by their individual backgrounds. Fueled by introspective lyrics and nos talgic melodies provided by the intimate combination of viola\, bass\, and acoustic guitar\, his music explores themes of loss\, growth\, and the pa ssage of time with fresh eyes. Arran’s third album\, Weight of Time\, debu ted in January of 2018 to a sold-out release show and was followed by a ti reless West Coast tour. Praised by outlets like half& half and Elsewhere fo r its powerful stories\, cathartic songwriting\, and ability to “[weave] c oncrete images and abstract feelings\,” Weight of Time saw Arran establish himself as a surefooted and exciting fixture in the Portland folk scene.< /p>\n
The “Warmth / Death” EP was released in early 2019. For the duration of 2019\, Arran was on hiatus while conducting a Fulbrig ht Grant working as a secondary English teacher in a rural school in Saraw ak\, Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Returning to Portland in January 20 20\, Arran can now be found playing shows around the Portland area and is working on his next solo musical project.

Currently living in the beautiful small village of Joshua Tree\, CA. The death place of Graham Parsons and birth place of many arti stic visions! Just a couple hours away from Los Angeles\, Annachristie has been writi ng and recording her newest EP “Sibling Rivalry” while soaking up the moun tain views.
\nShe was born outside of Philadelphia\, PA in a suburb called Downingtown some might know as home of the blob diner. Ann achristie grew up in a two bedroom red brick house with 7 home-schooled si blings\, ironically just a couple blocks away from an elementary school. A s the kids would walk home from school\, she and her brothers and sisters would sing songs\, do cartwheels\, ballet and try to sell toys to the othe r kids. Her father Dennis Sadler (founder of Songwriter’s Conspiracy) supp orted all 8 children as an antique dealer. Annachristie followed in his fo otsteps in the trade of buying and selling in order to dedicate more time to her real passion\, music.
\nAnnachristie is musically em erging from a life long project with her sisters\, Sisters3 who successful ly released “Coruscate at the Meadow Gate” (2012 NYC release recorded at T he Cutting Room) under Modern Vintage Recordings. They also recorded “Star Spangled” (2009) in Hamilton\, Ontario\, Canada in the same church Feist had recorded her early albums.
\nThe latest\, light-hearted release “Sibling Rivalry” will be her fourth release to date and her firs t solo release since her premiere album “Elixer for the Human Heart” (2005 ). Currently\, she is in the thick of booking a release tour both in the U SA\, as well as in Europe.
\nShe has shared the stage with artists such as Amos Lee\, First Aid-Kit\, Langhorn Slim\, and Hoots and H ellmouth. As luck or hard work would have it. Annachristie and Sisters3 sa ng all the backup vocals for Sharon Little on her tour with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant. She has made appearances on Mountain Stage\, NBC Ten Sho w\, Good Morning New York\, Philadelphia Folk Festival and Bliss Fest.
\nShe is as hard working as a donkey and as magical as a unico rn.
\nAnnachristie has had a long romance singing in the su bways of NYC sharing her music with the transient city traveling relentles sly with a vigor for adventure that you can taste when she sings. She is a true minstrel looking to sing you a song on the way\, a siren luring you to look at the ocean.
\nWill you come along?

e a ghostly jukebox\; hazy melodies with sweet\, lingering waves of nostal
gia.
\nBorn in California\, raised in Chicago\, transformed by Oaklan
d and set alight by New Orleans\, Jessie Antonick’s heart and hands are co
ntinually consumed by her passion for songwriting\, building\, and creatin
g space—an eternally braided compulsion for crafting and evoking emotion\,
for creating worlds where one’s spirit can roam free—where a wandering mi
nd can find home.
\n
Antonick discovere d a love for music early in life in the live venues and record shops of Ch icago. Captivated by doo-wop artists as a child and thrilled by indie and punk rock as a teen\, it was her discovery of classic American styles tha t inspired her to learn to play the guitar.
\n\n
Longing for the ocean air\, she soon settled in Oakland\, CA\, living on a sailboat whilst building and repairing sails as the push and pull of the tides slowly found their way into her blood\, then to the page\, and final ly to her guitar. The rising and falling pulse of her heart and the chatt er of her mind pushed her to create an elegant\, transportable canvas cott age where she set in solitude to discover the melodies and rhythms passing through the light and upon the sea air. Antonick soon discovered a new h ome in her ‘78 Chevy van and she followed the sound of the rushing Mississ ippi River down to New Orleans where she found herself humbled by cultural beauty and set ablaze with inspiration.
\n\n
It was in New Orleans where Antonick began writing the new Pony Hunt release VAR!. In VAR! she investigates the heart and mi nd entangled\, looking to understand how to be at home with one’s self\, e xploring the dualities of mind at play within her journey of emotional con nection\, societal imposition\, gender\, lost identities and the lesser un derstood–– discovered variables amongst the seemingly ever still.

\nPeter Donovan is an astute musical s toryteller. His perceptive songs span genres and feature narratives based on both real-life and fictitious characters\, written with a contemplative heart. After finding success and a dedicated fanbase with Seattle’s All T he Real Girls and his side project The Rose Petals (alongside Elijah Ocean )\, Donovan returns in 2022 with his first proper solo album\, This Better Be Good.
\nHis previous releases spun expertly-crafted character sk etches that earned plaudits from Paste Magazine\, Consequence of Sound\, A merican Songwriter\, and more. With This Better Be Good\, Donovan spreads his wings\, combining the plaintive soul of indie rock\, the heartfelt sin cerity of Americana\, and the stirring studio pageantry of ‘70s singer-son gwriters\, drawing them together to explore more intimate depths.
\nThis Better Be Good is Donovan’s most personal effort yet\; a loose concep t record about the ups and downs of an ultimately doomed romance between t wo people. The songs are more reflective than bitter\; more nostalgic than sad. It’s an album about learning and growing from lived experiences and reflecting on past failures in the interest of future successes. Donovan h as managed to create an album that is sonically nostalgic and modern at on ce\, both soul-stirring and dripping with heartache. It’s a roadmap of his past seen through fresh eyes\, and a triumphant first step in this new ch apter.

As a youngster in the E ast Bay with a cool older sister\, they were handed down a mix CD that inc luded some material by the late Elliott Smith. Hearing “Between The Bars” opened the door to other Portland acts like Smith’s former band Heatmiser and Sleater-Kinney. The allure was immediate.
\n“When you’re going through something\, especially as an angsty teenager\, it’s not really har d to find something that speaks to you in music from people like Elliott\, ” Subrahmanyam said. “And when I was starting to drum\, finding bands that were so dynamic —that had this balance between quiet and loud\, and this seething undertone that ran through even the quieter parts — appealed to m e as someone that feels like people think I had nothing to say or offer bu t at home\, I got to bang on shit and let that out.”
\nMoving to Po rtland felt\, in some ways\, inevitable\, drawn here as Subrahmanyam was b y the music and a promising post-graduate program in speech pathology. Sin ce arriving\, they have slowly worked their way into the artistic communit y\, starting their journey drumming for artists like Mo Troper and Balloon Club.
\nBut after taking a few introductory guitar lessons\, Subra hmanyam began to write their own songs\, amassing a collection of lowkey b ut powerful material that they have recorded and performed under the name Phone Voice.
\nTheir debut release\, 2021’s crad le tape\, is a perfect blending of the confessional and the metaphori cal\, as Subrahmanyam unpacks broken relationships and inner torment. “I a m the air that surrounds you\,” they sing over agitated waves of distorted guitar on “river.” “River of shame\, you flow within me / yet you are now here / not around me anymore.”

\nJeremy James Meyer is an artificer of song. A songwrite r’s songwriter. He crafts redemptive songs full of woody rock ‘n’ roll ton es. His deep\, penetrating voice has a wide range\, and is especially capt ivating in his droning\, lower register. He spent the last decade drifting around\, a tool belt troubadour\, working carpentry by day\, bringing fol k music to the people at night. As with most well traveled songwriters it’ s hard to tell where the road ends and Jeremy James Meyer begins. His song s seamlessly blend plain-language and poetic lyricism. They wander from pe rsonal truth to outlaw legends. He’s capable of cathartic protest songs\, cosmic country canticles\, and dive bar sing-a-longs. Whenever\, and howev er your path crosses with Jeremy James Meyer’s (and it will) prepare for a n enchanting\, psychedelic trip through cosmic American music.
\n“Alive and OK by Jeremy James Meyer is a lesson in what country music can be. This is not the pop country of Nashville. T his is real country music with stories and melodies that keep the listener engaged. Whether it’s a foot stomper or a song made for slow dancing\, Me yer delivers songs that will get you moving.”
\n\n“L ast year was a devastating time for fans of Americana\, country\, and pret ty much anyone who loved a well-written song with the passing of Walker\, Prine and Billy Joe Shaver all in the span of six months. It’s heartening though to know there is another generation of talented singers and songwri ters eschewing current trends and fads and focusing simply on writing time less\, relatable music agnostic of specific genres. Meyer is certainly one of those acolytes to the greats\, alongside peers like Todd Snider and Ha yes Carll carrying that tradition into the future.”

\nNick Delffs grew up in Mendocino Co unty\, a lawless stretch of coastline that’s hard to get to and\, for many \, hard to escape. Nick did — emerging in the early aughts as the frontman for Portland band The Shaky Hands\, whose sharp\, jittery rock was anchor ed by Nick’s quavering vocals and questing lyrics. The Shaky Hands were ma instays of Portland on the verge of a major shift\, and they rode that shi ft a while\, signing to Kill Rock Stars and touring internationally with s ome of the bigger names in indie rock. But a hiatus in 2011 became indefin ite and Nick Delffs was once again cast into the world: working as a sidem an\, releasing solo records\, doing manual labor\, going deeper into his s piritual practices\, and\, crucially\, becoming a father.
\nBecoming a parent can affect different artists in different ways. Nick rode that c hange with surpassing grace and maturity. 2017’s Redesign\, his f irst full-length under his own name\, reflected the transition. In “Song f or Aja”\, Nick touched on other concerns familiar to those who follow his work: love of the natural world\; longing for spiritual and physical conne ction\; the desire to suffer with meaning and exult with abandon\, to embr ace somehow the world in its maddening contradictions and find the unity a t the core.
\nChildhood Pastimes\, his second release on Ma ma Bird Recording Co.\, is both more focused and\, despite being technical ly an EP\, more ambitious. It’s a four-song cycle — one song with many mov ements or four songs that bleed into one another\, depending on how you he ar it — that can be viewed either as a personal journey or an archetypal p assage of a human being through four discrete stages: roughly\, the moveme nt from childhood innocence into adolescent adventure (The Escape)\; the s udden immersion into a life of discovery and excitement (The Dream)\; the first experience of romantic love\, followed by the onset of heartbreak\, dissolution\, breakdown of self (The Affair)\; the emergence into a new wa y of thinking\, a fresh perspective that encompasses all the suffering and joy into a balanced whole (The Outside).
\nNick plays nearly all of the instruments here and the result is a unified aesthetic\, born ultimat ely of his deep-seated love of rhythm: the thrum and throb of the acoustic guitars\, the percussive melodic bang of the elegantly-crafted piano line s\, and always\, always the insistent\, driving drums\, propelling the rec ord\, and the listener\, on this journey as the four tracks bleed into one another\, one body\, one blood\, one beating heart. The concept of four s ongs that are really one suite of music requires a sure hand\, and Nick’s never shakes: the way the songs blend together while retaining their disti nctiveness — from the poppy exaltation of “The Escape” to the cold intensi ty\, almost like an acoustic Kraftwerk\, of “The Affair” — shows a songwri ter and musician who has fully grown into his powers.
\nThose who ha ve followed Nick’s career may see this as a culmination of years and years of honing and fine-tuning his bountiful gifts\, and wonder with delight w hat might come next. For those who haven’t listened to Nick before\, C hildhood Pastimes is the perfect entry point\, a distillation of what ’s come before and the promise of a new beginning.

\n\nPortland-based Erisy Watt will release her sophomore album Eyes lik e the Ocean on April 1 via American Standard Time Records. This is the hig hly anticipated follow-up to her 2019 debut hailed by No Depression as “an exercise in what contemporary folk today sounds like at its peak.” With t his new offering\, Erisy returns with a lovingly crafted\, sophisticated c ollection of songs\, recorded live-to-tape and produced by Y La Bamba’s Ry an Oxford.
\nErisy’s sound reliably alludes to iconic vocalists of t he 1960s\, but here\, finds a more fitting home in the vintage-tinged indi e ether of Bedouine or Julie Byrne. Her vocals are intimate and alluring\, an artful alternation between soothing whispers and gentle howls\, backed by an instrumental bigness that evokes windy mountainscapes and piercing blue skies. Throughout Eyes like the Ocean\, Erisy calls upon the expanse of earth and sky to navigate life as an adult woman—satiating restlessness \, finding connection\, and fostering that ever-elusive sense of self that allows one peace.
\nErisy Watt grew up in Nashville\, but it wasn’t until she left the city of music for college in California that she began writing her own songs. Both of these formative settings are pres ent in her creative instinct—Nashville’s knack for a timeless melody\, Cal ifornia’s bewildering vastness and dusty free spirit—but upon these sonic bones lives a body of global adventure. Erisy is an environmental professi onal with a deep fondness for nature\, and has spent time in eclectic loca les like Nepal\, Thailand\, and Hawaii\, most often in rugged\, remote wil derness. She approaches the music profession with a similar sense of purit y\; she once toured Europe on foot\, banjo on her back. This wide-open way of moving through a capacious planet enlivens Erisy’s music with true tro ubadour soul. Her songs spring not so much from one place in particular as from a series of well worn travel journals.
\nThis stretch of inspiration calls for acute musical capacity\, and fortuitously\, Eris y no doubt knows what she’s doing. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist\, she can walk up and down a fretboard in gymnastic Jazz chords\, craft com plex guitar patterns in a wide range of tempos\, and masterfully press her vocal performances past previous limits. In the midst of recording her de but album in 2018\, Erisy underwent surgery to remove a problematic polyp on her vocal chord. While the diagnosis and procedure proved traumatic\, E risy discovered a new vocal freedom in the healing process. Today\, she de scribes the feeling of being uninhibited\, both physically and creatively\ , as integral to her artistic evolution. The transformation is most palpab le on crossover hit “Big Sky\,” one of Erisy’s oldest songs\, which she po lished to shine.
\nOn Eyes like the Ocean\, Erisy lets her newly liberated talent shimmer\, but her real art is in connection: tracin g the invisible vessels between an ocean’s black depth and a mountain peak ’s twinkling tip\, tracking the slow immensity of glacial paths to the mon strous canyons they carve. She ties her insides to the outside\, taking ti ps from the cosmos\, a naturalist with a knapsack of stardust\, making lum inescent the dark parts of her path\, finding a way forward.

\n\nArran Fagan: Presented by Sou’weste r Arts
\nPraised for his introspective lyrics and vivid storytelling \, Portland-based folk artist Arran Fagan has garnered a following in his native Oregon with his uncanny ability to weave the personal and universal . After getting his start in the grassroots music scene of Southern Oregon \, Arran has spent the greater part of his life pursuing music\, creating wistful and evocative songs that explore themes that connect us all—loss\, addiction\, change\, and the endless passage of time.
\nWith heartf elt lyrics and rich instrumentation that has garnered comparisons to Josh Ritter and Nathaniel Rateliff\, Arran has spent years in the NW folk music scene\, getting his start playing coffee shops and house shows for colleg e classmates and eventually going on to open for Northwest favorites like Leif Vollebekk\, HorseFeathers\, Kris Orlowski\, Matthew Fowler\, and Jeff rey Martin.
\nIn 2015\, Arran recruited fellow University of Portlan d students Jack Pfeffer and Jonathan Wiley\, and the three worked to perfe ct a sparse\, melodic sound influenced by their individual backgrounds. Ar ran’s 2018 album “Weight of Time” debuted to a sold-out release show and w as followed by a West Coast tour. Praised by outlets like half&half and El sewhere for its powerful stories\, cathartic songwriting\, and ability to “[weave] concrete images and abstract feelings\,” “Weight of Time” saw Arr an establish himself as a surefooted and exciting fixture in the Portland folk scene.
\nSama Dams: Presente d by Sou’wester Arts
\nFew bands co mmand the unexpectedly fine line that divides tension and release like Sam a Dams does. And it’s no wonder: songwriters Sam and Lisa Adams have been playing music together for over a decade – as long as they have been marri ed – developing a creative forthrightness that sometimes feels voyeuristic . Taking cues from jazz\, R&B\, new wave\, indie-rock\, and classical art song\, the alt-rock trio weaves a sensuous musical fabric that is distinct ly theirs.
\n\n
Much like the Dirty Projectors or Thom Yorke\, Sama Dams’s high art sensibiliti es are wrapped around a subversive knotty core of uncompromised radicalism – like if Leonard Bernstein was signed to K Records. In that way\, the DI Y ethos of the Pacific Northwest has shaped much of the band’s path forwar d since graduating music school in 2008 and relocating to Portland in 2012 .
\n\n
Sama Dams’s fo urth and most recent full-length album\, ‘Say It’\, surprises you with its gritty yet precise instrumentation\, striking a keen balance between rese rve and power\, from wiley “Neil-Young-riding-a-rocket-sled” electric guit ar riffs and mutant waves of organ to distorted ukulele and cut-up-on-the- spot breakbeats. The Portland Mercury said “‘Say It’ is an endlessly fasci nating sonic concoction\, and a confident step forward for Sama Dams.” Wha t should be a series of stylistic contradictions results in each song firm ly standing its ground as an interwoven compositional masterpiece\, bendin g and twisting with eclectic abandon.
\n\n
The band’s sprawling sonic footprint is held togethe r by their dynamic vocal power – an alternate-reality vocal pairing of Kat e Bush and Jeff Buckley. Sam and Lisa’s combined proficiencies and unique approaches to songwriting merge with the brilliant percussive work of drum mer Micah Hummel\, creating a matchless sound in live settings as well as in the studio.
\n\n
S ama Dams can regularly be found gracing stages\, music festivals\, and liv ing rooms across the United States and Central Europe\, their music findin g a place in the hearts of both music enthusiasts and general audiences al ike with their intelligent arrangements\, catchy melodies\, and playful mu sicality.
\n\n
The band’s support of their latest release Not Gonna Lie EP in February of 2020 was interrupted But they are happy to be back on stage \, and preparing to record a full length record.

\nA few years disappeared into the forest of a global pande mic\, but Kelli Schaefer and her brand new band trod through a new record this year\, and it is expected to leap from the woods in 2023. With two fu ll-length records and two EP’s already under her belt\, her new record is another pivot in stylistic choice. These son gs could be the soundtrack to a modern gothic\, a playlist for a trudge th rough the forest\, the accompaniment to a subconscious mantra. As expected \, Schaefer again demonstrates her refusal to confine herself to a single genre. Along with her bandmates Andrew Jones (bass)\, Ayal Alvez (piano\, keys)\, Joey Binhammer (guitar)\, Schaefer is working to finish the record and planning tour steadily in the foreseeable future. Lifelong cre ative folks\, John and Julie met in 2017\, started drawing together and ha ven’t looked back. They each had established artistic practices – John is a painter primarily and Julie is a filmmaker primarily – however both are open to working in ways that push them out of their comfort zones and allo w for spontaneity and improvisation. They have made drawings\, paintings\, films\, sounds\, saunas\, and land art together. To celebrate their “firs t date anniversary” each year\, they look at Wikipedia’s list of tradition al wedding anniversary gifts and have a ritual of making art using the mat erial assigned to that year. They cater the event\, ie\; order take-out\, and reflect on the year past and the year ahead for their relationship. Th e result is this collection of works presented here on the occasion of the ir wedding taking place July 22\, 2023. We Do: Saying Yes to a Relationshi p of Depth\, Connection and Enduring Love is a book by Stan Tatkin that ha s been a guidebook for building John and Julie’s relationship.
\n\n< strong>John Frentress has made art since the age of three and stu died art at Kirkwood College with Doug Hall who was an amazing multi-disci plinary artist. He went on to study and work at several schools and commun ity education centers on the west coast and considers himself to be primar ily a “proper” art school short timer\, and an auto-didactic life long lea rner. Like many artists\, he has a BS degree in Psychology. John had the p rivilege of occupying a studio in the Blackfish gallery in the Pearl distr ict of Portland for 19 years – sadly the building is now sitting vacant wa iting for a bulldozer. He works with brushes using oils\, acrylics\, sumi ink and watercolors – sometimes paints on light bulbs and other trash.

Tufted\, and interactive artwork\, Barn Rave\, 2011 encapsulates the frenetic\, feral exchange of energy found in a packed dance floor. The modular work recalls a night in a remote barn out side of Cedar Rapids\, Iowa. Its tessellated pieces intertwine\, forming a hazy\, abstracted scene of kids drenched in sweat\, a barn filled with fo g\, hay\, pulsating music\, and a mix of suspicious substances. This ephem eral experience imprints neural pathways.
\nThe puzzle-like components and imagery pay homage to a transformative and hedonistic celebration of youthful exuberance. The liberated sensualit y and sometimes-brainlessness of infectious bassy beats become the unyield ing desires to relinquish the burdens and constraints of adolescence in sm all town surroundings. The pieces move and connect\, at times surpassing a perfect fit. Capturing the raw energy of dancing amidst others. Capturing unbridled energy. Their arrangement allows for infinite reconfigurations— a reflection of the ever-shifting nature of the dance floor.
\n\nTori Wheeler is an artist\, designer\, and dancer whose work is i nfluenced by ecstatic human exchange\, touch and tactility\, music-and-nat ure-induced-trance-states\, and a dash of trickster humor. Their creative practice mirrors that of a desire path.
\nTori holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design from the Kansas City Art In stitute and works as a textile artist\, gold leaf gilder\, and fairweather graphic designer.

\nRebecca Sanborn began writing songs at age six\, sta rting an early pattern of straying creatively from sheet music. Her piano instructor taught her to write the music down\, which seemed like a magica l power. She also fell in love with theatre and writing\, pursuing all of these arts with equal passion. Rebecca got her first agent at age ten and landed starring roles in commercials. One director hired her on the spot because she had a voice “like Lauren Bacall”. In High School she would wak e at 5 am to jump rope in the driveway and then pound out short works of f iction on the typewriter in the garage so as not to wake anyone. The love affair with stories and music continued and at eighteen\, she left her nat ive Portland\, Oregon to study at The College of Santa Fe\, in New Mexico— majoring in Theatre and immersing herself in the free\, unpredictable worl d of the Contemporary Music Program. Every Thursday night a Forum was held where new music was emphatically encouraged. Rebecca had found her home. She studied under the experimental composers Joseph Weber and Peter Gordon and was moulded by Martha Graham’s personal demonstrator\, Juanita Barry\ , in rigorous modern dance classes for four years.
\nUpon returning to the Northwest after college\, Rebecca met her husband and musical partn er\, drummer Ji Tanzer. They are both members of the adventurous jazz quin tet\, Blue Cranes\, the art pop trio\, Swansea\, and Portland’s veteran in die group\, Loch Lomond. Rebecca and Ji also starred in the film “Light of Mine”\, which garnered a coveted spot at the A.F.I. Fest in 2011. “Light of Mine” was the only independent film from The States to be included in t he festival. Rebecca plays in the all-female\, cape-wearing\, fog-machine- loving synth trio\, Eccoh Eccoh Eccoh with Kyleen King (Brandi Carlile) an d Jenny Conlee-Drizos (The Decemberists).
\nIn 2021\, Rebecca was in vited to write an original set of music for the Montavilla Jazz Fest—compo sing and arranging eight songs in two months. She performed these tunes wi th her long-time mentor and hero\, pianist Randy Porter\, bassist Jon Shaw \, and of course\, Ji Tanzer. The work now stands as a collective entitled “Shadow Work”. Several pieces have since been arranged by Douglas Detrick \, and were performed at the 2022 Montavilla Jazz Fest with the 12-piece P ortland Jazz Composers’ Ensemble as a part of “The Heroine’s Journey” – an evening with Marilyn Keller\, Darrell Grant\, and Rebecca Sanborn. In 202 3\, Rebecca was awarded a RACC grant to record “Shadow Work”.
\nThro ughout all of the years of hard touring and performing\, Rebecca never los t touch with the written word. She earned a spot in the highly competitive Tin House Winter Workshop in 2016\, mentoring under Mitchell S. Jackson. She has completed five novels and continues to work on her literary\, musi cal\, or theatrical craft on a daily basis. When Rebecca isn’t engaged in art or teaching\, she can be found chasing after her costume-obsessed five -year-old daughter or trying to get some sleep.

“Lê Almeida is the mastermind of an unlikely and noisy indie scene that emerged in the suburbs of RIO DE JANEIRO in the early 2000s. A proli fic producer\, initially labeled _lo-fi_\, he was called the ‘Brazilian an swer to Robert Pollard’ in a report in _The Guardian_ which makes less sen se as his sound has incorporated elements of kraut\, free jazz\, afrobeat\ , hip hop and Brazilian music.” Excerpt from the biography available on DATABASE.FM/LEALMEIDA
\nOc tober 2023 marks the release of I FEEL IN THE SKY\, LÊ ALMEIDA’s new solo album. The album was recorded between 2022 and 2023\, during the tour of h is band ORUÃ\, with more than 100 shows in the USA and Europe. The album w ill be presented at SouWester\, during Lê Almeida’s first artistic residen cy in the United States\, which takes place in Seaview\, Washington.
\nHis independent label Transfusão Noise Records was born in his bedroom in 2004 in Vilar dos Teles\, Baixada Fluminense\, and emerged in the cente r of Rio de Janeiro in 2013 with the creation of Escritório\, a space for recording\, rehearsals and shows. More than 100 releases have been made si nce then. Lê played a major role in recording and mixing most of these alb ums\, where many of the visual ideas came from his collages\, associating fantastic realism with improbable combinations of environments and colors.
\nSince 2011 he has dedicated himself to the visual arts\, taking p art in exhibitions and collage workshops\, both individual and collective. His solo albums Paraleloplasmos (2015) and Todas as Brisas (2016) made hi m travel the art world beyond the usual music scene between tours of Brazi l. Both albums were released by IFB Records\, a small Atlanta-based label that presses his LPs independently and distributes them throughout the Uni ted States.

Starting in 2018\, the Portland\, Oregon-based artist has traveled through a few distinct phases\, going from acoustic songwriter to loop-pedal expe rt to full band frontperson. Her newest release\, an EP called “Win Some\, Lose Everyone” on the east coast-based indie label Self Aware Records\, i s a brief yet strong run of filled-out songs that signals a development in DeHart’s self-actualization. While prepping for i ts release\, DeHart came to the realization that t his would be the perfect time to adopt an official name for her project\, Myriads\, which nowadays includes much collaboration and feels significant ly bigger than just herself.
\n\n
Recorded mostly i n her bedroom and a backyard practice space belonging to her bandmate and partner Sean Cooper\, the four tracks that make up the EP build off of her acoustic beginnings and introduce a heavier and fuller sound to DeHart’s musical repertoire. She enlisted emo legend Peter Helmis\, a good friend and musical collaborator\, to mix the tracks and Ch ris Baglivo\, a Philly-based audio engineer\, musician\, and producer\, to master them. Her production choices are no coincidence\; DeHart’s music has a place in the universe of today’s emo and shoe gaze revival. In the sharp\, overdriven guitar riffs and verbed-out vocals \, you can hear her influences– there are distinct nods to bands like Tige rs Jaw\, Pity Sex\, and Turnover. Above all\, in her authentically vulnera ble lyrics and thoughtful storytelling\, she pays homage to the work of to day’s influential femme artists\, including Snail Mail\, Waxahatchee\, Pho ebe Bridgers\, and Wednesday.
\nDeHart span> is proud to be a part of the world of non-male musicians writing tho ughtful and heartfelt music that communicates strength and badassery. At t he same time\, she writes about the struggle of living with a marginalized identity\; in the EP’s concluding track\, “Whore\,” she explores the real ity of navigating relationships as a sex worker. Her lyrics hit like a tru ck\; during the musical and emotional climax of the track\, she laments\, “Thought that nobody would want me / worn out body\, I’m a whore.” DeHart’s intentional emotional transparency\, sometimes p ainfully honest and always woven together with meticulously layered instru mentation\, compels listeners to enter a dreamy\, introspective space that encourages them to open up\, explore\, and just rock out.
