Kit & Video Tutorial: Sandalmaking with Rachel Sees Snail Shoes
Learn to make Leather Sandals with Rubber Soles for your own feet! Choose from a variety of patterns or make your own style. Purchase a kit and follow a step-by-step tutorial video with Rachel, filmed here at the Sou’wester.
Rachel Corry is a sandal and shoemaker from Portland, Oregon. She teaches classes, makes custom shoes, and sells DIY kits to help share the fun of making your own shoes.
KIT CONTAINS:
Footbed Leather, Upper Leather, Rubber Soling material, Round leather laces, screw-back studs, instruction booklet, 3 pages of patterns, shoe-glue and brush, rotary hole-punch, Olfa utility knife, scratch awl, link to a 1-hr tutorial video.
STUDENTS PROVIDE:
Just your own feet! Rachel has left a bag of extra tools at The Sou’wester that could prove helpful in your shoe-crafting, and may be borrowed to assist with this project. (Tools may be lended-out and are to remain on-site: Scissors, Hammer, Ruler, Cutting-surface, Masking tape.)
AGE AND SKILL LEVEL:
This project is geared for those 12 years and older with an intermediate skill level. Advanced crafters will love this! Beginners might too, but be prepared to try a few new tricks with a knife.
VIDEO & LESSON LENGTH:
The video tutorial is 1 hour in length, but expect the whole sandalmaking process to take 4-5 hours.

Please purchase the kit in our Sou’wester Online Market and select “pickup”. The front desk staff will get your kit ready for you and place it in the market pickup area at the front desk just inside the door. You will get an email when your kit is ready for pickup, usually in 30 minutes or less. (For this lesson also order online via the Sou’wester Online Market, the bag of extra tools mentioned above, lended at no-cost, if you’d like to check them out to use for this project. These tools are to be returned to the front desk to be sanitized and made available to other students.)
Kits are currently available for pick-up only. All items in the purchased kit are yours to use and take home with you.
