Led by local multimedia artist, Laura Brown, students will use various artistic properties and mediums to explore aspects of local ecology.

Intro to Printmaking with Jess Graff

Jan 11 – 13 (Youth After-School Program)

Jan 15 (Saturday Workshop)

Learn a variety of lino block printmaking techniques to create a series of unique prints designed by you! Design tips and tricks, as well as techniques for safe tool usage will be taught in this hands-on workshop. Projects are customizable to all skill levels. Printmaking encourages planning skills, motor skills, and application of design concepts.

Color and Value in Painting Nature with Sou’wester Staff Laura Halsey Brown

Jan 18 – 20 (Youth After-School Program)

Immerse yourself in a sense of place and explore the ecology of the Long Beach Peninsula through an artistic lens! Each week students will focus on different artistic properties and mediums to explore aspects of local ecology. Examples include observing and painting beach scapes, collecting plants to create cyanotypes, and learning about the environment through found objects collage and sculpture. This unique series of workshops is led by one of our internal staff members and is offered every other week on T, W, and Th from Jan 18th – March 31st. Registration for the other Arts & Ecology staff-led workshops is recommended but not required.



Woodland Wonders in Clay with Jess Graff

Jan 25 – 27 (Youth After-School Program)

Explore the flora and fauna of the forest in this fun, adaptable clay workshop! Learn basic ceramic hand-building skills while exploring woodland themes! Participants will create their pieces using pinch, coil, slab, and pebble styles of hand-building. Students will also experiment with texture tools, both nature-made and human-made, to create different effects in their clay work. This program incorporates natural sciences, encourages special awareness, and builds kinesthetic skills.

Explorations in Natural Dye with Iris Sullivan

Feb 8 – 10 (Youth After-School Program)

Feb 12 (Saturday Workshop)

During the After-School Program, students will use plant-based dyes and minerals to create traditional decorative papers for bookbinding. Students will use the papers to make journals and sketchbooks. Explore a rainbow of pigments during our Saturday Workshop! Inspired by the occasional rainbow amidst the gray and rain, in this workshop students will create dye silk rainbows to lift our spirits and enliven our hearts.

Tools, Toys and Things with Kaitlyn McKenzie Nelson

Feb 22 – 24 (Youth After-School Program)

Feb 26 (Saturday Workshop)

A 3D design and build workshop focusing on material exploration and object purpose. Students will have access to a variety of materials such as wood, wire, fabric, clay and other odds and ends to experiment with and sculpt into their own inventive objects.

Cold Forged Wire Jewelry with Junko Iijima

March 8 – March 10 (Youth After-School Program)

March 12 (Saturday Workshop)

Learn how to make simple jewelry out of copper and brass wire using the cold forging technique. Students will learn how to make simple rings, pendants, bracelets, and chain necklaces. Saturday’s workshop will be a more in depth exploration in cold forging techniques using simple tools such as a hammer, steel bench block, and pliers.

Upcycled Fashion with Ophir El-Boher

March 22 – 24 (Youth After-School Program)

March 26 (Saturday Workshop)

In this workshop we will turn unwanted garments into new fabulous creations! Bring in any piece of clothing you no longer want and we’ll make it into something completely new and unique! Learn to apply basic sewing skills to reimagine new styles.

All workshops will be held in the Pavilion at the Sou’Wester Lodge located at 3728 J Place Seaview, WA 98644.
