FALL 2023 WORKSHOPS

Led by Sou’wester Artist-in-Residence instructors, our all-ages workshops give you hands-on experience so you can unleash your inner artist, acquire a new skill, and gain a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship.


Ceramics workshops take place at Ilwaco Artworks while all other workshops take place in The Sou’wester Pavilion. Shipping & Handling Policy for workshop creations that cannot be picked up: 1lb or less $20, 1-2lbs $30.

Handbuilt Pitchers

3-day ceramic workshop

w/ Taylor Stefanski $90

Students will be led through a series of hand building techniques to create their very own pitchers! We will cover how to create your base, refining forms, making handles. On the last day we will cover decorating with underglaze and adding small adornments.

Oct 27th-29th (FULL)

Handbuilding a Fermentation Crock

3-day ceramic workshop

w/ Jo Pfeifer $90

In this three day workshop, we will help you hand build a fermentation crock you will use for years to come. We will focus on building crocks that will hold 1-3 quarts and have a matching lid so the water seal will keep that ferment fresh! We will provide all the materials you need, just bring some clothes and a towel you don’t mind getting a little messy. No previous ceramics knowledge necessary.

Nov 4th

Floating Nature Workshop

Make a Hanging Mobile

w/ Lila Ferber $70

In this workshop students will collect treasures from nature such as sticks, pinecones, rocks, and shells then transform the materials by cutting, gluing, and drilling holes in them, tie them to string, and attach them to arches of wire. Use a simple technique to balance heavy and lightweight materials, creating a whimsical, spinning, hanging mobile that spins in the wind.

Nov 11th (FULL)

Screen Printing With Natural Dyes

w/ Katey Rissi $60

Learn how to make screenprinting ink from scratch using natural dyes and use those inks to create prints. In this class, students will create a screen printed edition on paper, working with a palette of color made possible by materials foraged and grown. The resulting work is entirely biodegradable, place-based, and beautiful!

Nov 18th

Japanese Decorative Paper and Bookbinding

w/ Yuka Petz $60

In this hands-on workshop we will be introduced to sekkazome (also known as orizomegami), which is a traditional Japanese form of folding and dying paper to create a variety of colorful patterns. We will then use our newly designed papers to bind into a traditional stab-bound book.
