WEEK ONE: Plants of the Refuge!
7/30 – 8/1 | 9AM-12PM | Free*

Students will spend TUESDAY 7/30 at the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge with representatives Hope Presley and Sunny Kemmer hiking and learning about local plants, trees, and mushrooms. Students will bring these experiences into the studio at Ilwaco Artworks on WEDNESDAY 7/31 and THURSDAY 8/1 with art educator Kaitlyn Nelson where students will be making ceramic Nature Boxes inspired by their day at the Refuge.

WEEK TWO: Birds of the Refuge!
8/6 – 8/8 | 9AM-12PM | Free*

Students will spend TUESDAY 8/6 at the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge with representatives Hope Presley and Sunny Kemmer hiking and learning about birds, migration, and what makes Willapa Bay so special. Students will bring these experiences into the studio at Ilwaco Artworks on WEDNESDAY 8/7 and THURSDAY 8/8 with art educator Kaitlyn Nelson where students will be making ceramic Bird Bowls inspired by what they learned at the Refuge.


Thanks to ArtsWA’s Creative Start Grant, Sou’wester Arts is offering FREE + low-cost arts integrated ceramics classes for preschool-3rd grade students for the 24-25 school year + “Explore the Bay with Clay!” youth program with TWO summer camp weeks, then once per month Kids Clay Play events starting this fall, and three 5-week after school ceramics class sessions in partnership with DJHCC. These classes will be supported by Willapa National Wildlife Refuge specialists – teaching youth about our incredible local ecology through hands-on arts learning experiences.
