Into the Whirl: Cross-Step Waltz with Steve Carruthers
Apr 7 @ 10:30 am – 1:30 pm

Spring 2018 Workshop Series at The Sou’wester

Into the Whirl: Cross-Step Waltz
with Steve Carruthers

Discovered and popularized by Stanford University Professor Richard Powers, Cross-step Waltz comes to the north coast! It is a beguiling, accessible partner dance, beloved the world over, with popular music of many genre. Together we will learn this turning and gliding dance in a circle, with a short, easy, repeating routine. As we practice and solidify the basic Cross-step Waltz, we will add skills in lead/follow technique, and learn a basic 3-steps “starter” move to be able to take waltzing outside the group circle, to travel and dance around the room freely with a partner, moving together in the moment. All-levels welcome, no partner needed to register. We will rotate partnering. We’ll take breaks through the time. Bring a hearty snack to keep yourself fueled.

Steve got hooked on partner dancing in 1990, beginning with Scandinavian folk-dancing in Portland. He began teaching lead/follow partner dancing in classes and private lessons in 2011. He has taught at The Viscount Dance Studio and currently conducts a weekly class at Multnomah Arts Center – Portland Parks & Recreation. He and other dancers and teachers are establishing the ‘de-gendering’ of social dancing such that today any person may learn and do either or both roles. Steve keeps the perspective of the learner in mind by continually being a student himself, taking classes and lessons in Portland and at dance festivals. He has a t-shirt emblazoned with the words “the music made me do it,” revealing the way he likes to be, and hopes everyone can be; connecting with each other, as two dancers collaborating in the moment, tuning in to each other and the music, co-creating a work of kinetic expression of color and emotion in the music. Steve is a Warrenton-Hammond native and especially pleased to bring Cross-step Waltz to the north coast.

COST: $28 per person or $52 per couple
BRING: Wear light comfortable shoes, smooth soles, no high heels. Option for dancing shoes-free, bring snug fitting socks. Bring water bottle, and hearty snack to stay fueled. (hot tea and coffee provided) (Optional – bring a sack lunch for after 1:30pm & optional open studio to practice after 1:30pm also)
Come alone or with a partner, no partner needed to RSVP. 18 students max.

Sou’wester Arts Presents: Ural Thomas & The Pain @ The Sou'wester
Apr 7 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Sou'wester Arts Presents: Ural Thomas & The Pain @ The Sou'wester | Seaview | Washington | United States

Ural Thomas is, and forever will be Portland’s pillar of soul, and he and The Pain will be playing a benefit show for The Sou’wester’s New Non-Profit! Join us!

Ural started singing beneath his mother’s knee in church at the age of 3. By high school he led the doo-wop group the Mono Rays, breaking hearts and taking names at Jefferson High and Irvington Park along the way. Ural’s voice and songwriting soon gained national attention and he found himself sharing the stage with the likes of James Brown, Otis Redding, Johnny Guitar Watson and “Little” Stevie Wonder. He played the Apollo 44 times. He backed the Northwest’s biggest soul and garage outfits of the1960s (The Kingsmen, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Cavaliers Unlimited) and he never for a moment stopped teaching, singing and loving soul music..

Now Ural is poised to represent Portland on equal ground with contemporaries like Lee Fields, Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley, all of whom ultimately gained their dues in their golden years. To ensure the legacy he’s backed by a 9 piece band comprised of the some of the most recognizable session and solo players in town. Band leader/drummer Scott Magee (aka DJ Cooky Parker) has arranged a setlist compiled from the gilded age of soul and R&B and Ural originals, all with a sharp focus on moving the dance floor. The foot stomping days of Jump Town, USA have returned and Ural Thomas & the Pain are here to lead the way.

This show WILL sell out, so Get Your Ticket Now!

WEEKLY EVENT

Mindfulness Talk with Shanna Gillette

Shanna is a certified yoga teacher, ordained metaphysical counselor and empath. Her journey began as a small child inadvertently discovering deep meditation as an escape from abuse. Having always had an interest in the unseen and unexplained, she began having out of body experiences before learning to speak.  Eventually she received a regents scholarship to ASU for religious studies. A series of intense life changing experiences including a serious car accident brought her to the first of several “awakenings,” beginning most notably in 2005. She now helps people through the shift in consciousness we are currently experiencing, assisting them along the path toward self-forgiveness and self-love – the greatest journey of all.

Truly exemplifying her favorite quote from Kahlil Gibran, “The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain,’ she adds, “The journey to wellness is a constantly evolving process where we learn to nurture body and mind beginning with the heart; To truly understand that the most important step to long-lasting good health and harmony isn’t necessarily about sweating our way to perfect abs or contorting our bodies into painful positions. It starts within. It’s about self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, and self-love. It’s about learning to accept and respect ourselves wherever we may be. Through the physicality of yoga, we tune into a deeper more expansive space beyond the trivial day to day. We learn that it’s ok to nurture ourselves and to ALLOW our spirits to be happy.”

Shanna received her yoga teacher’s certification at Bryan Kest’s world renowned studio in Santa Monica, CA. She attended Arizona State University for Religious Studies, and is currently studying at the University of Metaphysics Sedona. She is available for private yoga and counseling sessions and can be found at:

The Sou’wester Presents: Planes on Paper @ The Sou'wester
Apr 14 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
The Sou'wester Presents: Planes on Paper @ The Sou'wester | Seaview | Washington | United States

“It’s easy to see why Planes on Paper is starting to attract serious attention on the neo- folkie scene.”
— Paul de Barros, The Seattle Times
“There has been no shortage of bands that sound like Planes on Paper in the last 10 years of Seattle music, which makes it simultaneously delightful and frustrating when one of them is clearly a full head taller than the others.
— Sean Nelson, The Stranger
“This is folk music at the highest level.” — Greg Jones, Ear to the Ground Music
“Planes on Paper expertly maneuvers dual vocals to produce this eerie, serene, beautiful aesthetic […] simultaneously mellow and powerful.”
— Fallon Schlossman, WNYC New York
As a one year-old project, Planes on Paper was already receiving high praise from a nearly endless list of media outlets across the country: The Seattle Times, American Songwriter Magazine, KEXP Seattle, WNYU New York, The Revue, Ear To The Ground, and The Stranger, to name just a few. Now 2.5 years into relentless touring, the praise continues, and the songwriting duo finds itself at home on both coasts of the US, and playing some noteworthy festivals… all without yet releasing an album; that unconventional path speaks volumes about the strength of Planes on Paper’s live show.
