Tsar Anise @ Sou'wester Lodge
Sep 22 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Tsar Anise @ Sou'wester Lodge

Tsar Anise is the Pacific Northwest-based, dreamy bedroom-pop recording project of Sarah Van Horn, turned live two-piece with the addition of Tasha Trasher. The two, sharing a love of things lush and beautiful, create unique and emotional recordings while seeking to connect through their genuine and dynamic live shows.
Sarah (pdx locals Vibrissae, Visiting Diplomats, So Long Forever, Larrabee) began writing and recording for the project in 2015 while in various states of life and locale transition. The songs, materializing out of her ruminations on womanhood, lost love and faith, mental illness, and familial estrangement resulted in the Leisure/Love Demo (Nov.2016). Her style of dreamy, pop-inspired music weaves through genres and shows little concern for traditional structure or rules; relying more on feeling and story to guide the outcome. Tasha (Violaine, Magic Mansion, Kim Baxter, Hope and Anchor, and innumerable other well-loved PDX bands) joined in late 2017. With Tasha bringing her experience as a seasoned multi-instrumentalist and song writer to the creative process, the two are working on new songs and recordings. Their live sound has been compared to Low, Neko Case and The Cocteau Twins.
Tsar Anise is the ‘verby soundtrack to your quotidian-escapist daydreams and the radio playing while you make french toast on the weekend. Tsar Anise is sincere, self-indulgent survival in a space suit.

After high school, she continued west to Portland Oregon and continued her studies at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Heather completed her Bachelors of Fine Art in Printmaking in 2005. She currently serves at the print studio Manager at PNCA while also teaching printmaking and youth arts as an adjunct instructor in PNCA’s Continuing Education Program. The Art Trailer Gallery lives in a 1960’s Aloha made in Aloha, Oregon! It was rescued from a neglected RV park in the northern part of the Long Beach Peninsula. After lots of TLC, it has transformed into a bright and beautiful open space to reflect a traditional gallery. It is now part of the Artist Residency Program and our non-profit organization, Sou’wester Arts.

Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread is comprised of musicians from all over America.
“We’ve all played together in various arrangements over the past few years”, says Nau. “We made a record with this core group last year and did a west coast trip at the end of ’17. It was fun and so we want to try and keep it going wherever we can. As such, we’re going to do a string of shows coming up wherein any show listed as “…& the mighty thread” will be full band shows comprised of Will Brown on keys, Benny Yurco on guitar, Graeme Gibson on drums, Robinson Morse & Evan ApRoberts on bass and hopefully get to release some music featuring these bandmates in the near future”.

The Sou’wester Presents: Esmé Patterson
Oct 14 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Denver, CO’s Esmé Patterson has been making waves all around the country since going solo in 2012 (she was previously in Denver based Paper Bird). Her voice is smooth and sweet when she wants it to be, and then fully rock and roll when you least expect it. Each of Patterson’s songs listens like an intensely personal diary entry, and you’ll likely find yourself relating to all of them with wide eyed wonder.

Syrinx Effect @ Sou'wester Lodge

Syrinx Effect @ Sou'wester Lodge

An acoustic-electric duo with endless possibilities, Syrinx Effect plays their own blend of folk punk jazz. They easily switch between dreamy ambient loops, catchy pop riffs and found sounds, all the while paying homage to their free improv roots. Naomi plays trombone with guitar pedals and Kate plays soprano saxophone with laptop and other toys. The duo got its start curating the Racer Sessions in Seattle, and has gone on to perform prolifically around the US, collaborating with many of the mainstays of the improvised music scene such as Wayne Horvitz, Robin Holcomb, Elliott Sharp, Bobby Previte, Stuart Dempster, Allison Miller, Rene Hart. Syrinx Effect makes music that is authentic and expressive, employing everything from simple folk melodies to abstract, ambient noise. Each piece is a meditation, an exploration, and sometimes a romp.
