Writing is Magic: Mythological Writing with Nick Jaina & Olivia Pepper

Writing is magic and deserves the reverence and dignity we give to such things. Writing is also a personal discipline, not a competition, and it is much more than a means of gaining fame and recognition.
These workshops are devoted to going deeper with our writing, becoming better observers, better critical thinkers, and ultimately more balanced people. We can use writing to save our own lives and the lives of others. This is important work.

(Students are encouraged to take both classes, Nov 11th and Nov 12th, but are also welcome to join one or the other. The content of each class will be different. The focus of the class on Nov 11th will be on Intuitive Writing: finding methods to let go of your critical voice to generate material that will surprise you, teach you more about yourself, help you deal with questions. The focus of the class on Nov 12th will be on Mythological Writing: understanding forms of writing and storytelling structures found in Tarot, alchemy, and mythology to help structure your stories and your writing practice.)
Nick Jaina is a writer and musician from Portland, Oregon. His memoir Get It While You Can was a finalist for the 2016 Oregon Book Award. Olivia Pepper is a healer and mystic from Austin, Texas.
COST: $50 for one class or $100 for both classes

Salsa QuickStart Workshop with Sarah Riddle
Have you been curious about learning Salsa, but feel little intimidated? Don’t be! Let us demystify one of the easier partner dances to learn. It may be fast, but it isn’t complicated, and contrary to popular belief, you do not have to know how to shimmy to know how to Salsa! This 3 hour intensive workshop is geared to get dancers and NON dancers moving to today’s most popular Latin Rhythm – SALSA! The class will cover Salsa rhythm, body movement, Salsa timing, 3 basic step variations, three turn patterns, and more… No partner required. Wear layers and comfortable/thin soles shoes with little to no tread.
Sarah Riddle has been dancing, teaching, and performing Latin dances since 1997. Her lifelong training in Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Cabaret, and Jazz, which have deeply influenced her style of Latin dance, teaching, and choreography. A former member and co-director of Portland’s first Salsa dance company, Sabor Latino, and one of Portland early Salsa pioneers, Sarah has studied, performed, choreographed, and taught all over the world. Her training in african based social dances is vast (LA style, Puerto Rican, Columbian, Casino, Afro-Cuban, NY Salsa on ‘2’, Classic Mambo, Forro, Kizomba, Boogaloo, Plena, Bomba, and even Samba) making her approach to dancing and teaching not only well researched, but thorough. Sarah is a former PCC faculty member in the Humanities department teaching World Dance: History of Salsa, so if you have an interest in the history of Salsa, she loves to talk about it! That being said, her Salsa classes are taught on 1, and Cha Cha on 2, incorporating bits from all the other types of Latin dance out there, so that students are well informed of what they experience in the social scene, and in their travels! Don’t know what on 1 or 2 means? Don’t worry, she’ll explain it in class 😉 Her wedding prep and Partner 101 classes pull from her experience with other dances, such as Swing, Tango, Waltz, Zydeco, and NightClub 2-Step. She does not teach ballroom, or competitive dance. Her style of teaching is 100% client based. Sarah is able to articulate not just how the dance and music work, but why, and how to make it yours. Her classes are upbeat, fun, sometimes analytical, and full of dancing (not just demo). The material is dance-floor appropriate, meaning you can actually use it in a social setting. She applies a no-scold policy to all of her classes, so don’t be afraid to make mistakes 😉 Sarah plays in a local rock band (Ages and Ages) as a percussionist/vocalist, so be prepared to learn some rhythm! She also spent 10 years as an early childhood educator, so you can be sure that she will cover all styles of learning in her approach to teaching, and with supernatural patience.

Partner Dancing 101 Workshop with Sarah Riddle
You want to learn to dance, but don’t know where to start? Perfect. There are many beautiful dances out there to learn, but sometimes just the fundamentals of how to move with rhythm and grace with another person are enough. This 3 hour workshop will focus on lead/follow technique that are universal, and the mechanics of traveling, turning, and moving as one. Students will learn how to find and keep a beat, and how to tailor each dance to the particular style of song they are dancing to and how to work with their own natural dance skills. This is not a ballroom course where you learn ‘forms’ and strict patterns. This class is about learning how to dance in any context with another person. Students leave this workshop not just being the masters of their own dance, but the creators as well. It is a valuable life skill!
What’s the biggest take-away from this workshop? You will learn how to love, not fear, partner dancing. This class is great for anyone looking to hone their partner dance skills without having to choose a specific dance style to master. No partner required. Drawing as Seeing & the Acceptance of Chaos: A Sumi Ink Wash Drawing Workshop with Heather McLaughlin
Drawing is a way of seeing, a way of understanding, and an exercise. This drawing workshop will focus on pleinair (on-sight) observational drawing with the beautiful and chaotic material: sumi ink. The ink is an excellent tool to capture light and shapes, as compared to the way pencils and pens lead themselves to contours and patterns. This special ink has rich, deep blacks that are easy to swoon over. During this 4 hour workshop students will complete multiple small drawings. We will cover techniques for recording scale, light and shapes while practicing pleinair drawing skills and increase our understanding and mastery of the sumi ink medium.
Heather McLaughlin was born next to the Chesapeake Bay in Baltimore Maryland and relocated to Red Lodge Montana, on the north border of Yellowstone Park, in 1991. After high school, she continued west to Portland Oregon and continued her studies at Pacific Northwest College of Art, where she completed her Bachelors of Fine Art with a focus in traditional Printmaking in 2005. She served on the board of Flight 64 Studio (a Member-run Print Studio) from 2008 until 2014. She currently manages the Printmaking Studio at PNCA in addition to teaching classes in the Continuing Education program. Settle Your World: Self Empowering Techniques for Fostering a Calm Life in a Wild World with Jason Tschimperle
Through self study, meditation, breath work, Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping), and down to earth real talk, we will help each other make a plan for creating more calm and living freer in the wilderness of humanity.
Jason Tschimperle is the proprietor of Mamook Wellness at The Sou’wester Lodge, an educator, meditation instructor, sound healer, and therapeutic bodyworker. And he likes being calm.

Cut It Up Art Card Party: “Put A Bird On It” with Mark Elliott
Create unique art cards using images, shapes and colors cut from a large selection and variety of magazines. Choose magazines to cut up or select from a collection of high quality bird photography images on glossy cardstock. Collage onto art board or cardstock, postcard size and/or larger. Come together for the sheer joy of making art. We’ll provide the art supplies, you bring a good supply of creative enthusiasm. No art-making experience is needed. Join in on this relaxed atmosphere, not necessarily taught, but instead gently facilitated by an artist who will happily help and answer any questions. Arrive anytime and come for just a bit or stay the entire time…you decide! Adult-geared event but parent-guided kids are welcome.
Art and Birds are two of Mark Elliott’s loves. Mark Elliott has and MFA from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio and a BFA from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, and has been birding for 35 years. Mark is the Audubon Society of Lincoln City’s field trip guide and teaches raptor identification and basic birding at Oregon Coast Community College. He also leads field trips for Yaquina Birders and Naturalists in Newport, Oregon and at the Birding and Blues Festival in Pacific City, Oregon. Mark stays active in citizen science by taking part in annual Christmas Birdcounts and has been recording data for COASST (Coastal Observation And Seabird Survey Team) for seven years. He has birded 48 states, the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico and Europe. He now lives on the Oregon coast.

Coptic Stitch Bookbinding with Jillian Barthold
Make your very own blank Coptic Stitch hand-bound book! In this workshop you’ll learn the basic tools used in bookbinding and the step by step process of making a hard cover coptic stitch book! Coptic stitch binding is one of the earliest forms of bookbinding and is sewn with thread leaving an exposed spine. You’ll leave with your very own blank book to use as a journal, recipe book, or sketchbook! Beginners to Advanced – All skill levels welcome!
Jillian Barthold is an illustrator, printmaker, bookbinder, and maker from nowhere. Her work acts as a magnifying glass to explore the everyday objects that surround us. She teaches screenprinting and book arts at the IPRC (Independent Publishing Resource Center), loves looking at maps, and wears glitter every single day. She is the co-founder of Fruit Salad Club, an unapologetically silly studio, community, and gallery space in Portland, OR.
COST: $30

Creating a Travel Journal with Fay Malloy & Marilyn Zornado
Students will learn the basics of creating a travel journal. We will discuss the history of the travel journal, illustration, narrative and page layout strategies. We will show historical examples from Lewis & Clark to Malloy & Zornado. Students will create a clever leather-wrapped travel journal with a pencil closure. For students who want to share their work, we will discuss publication options as well as using Adobe InDesign and other on-line publishing options.
Fay Malloy and Marilyn Zornado, proprietors of Fremont Garden Press, are the authors of the “The Longest Beach, An Eccentric Guide to the Long Beach Peninsula,” “Bottoms Up, A Guide to Seasonal Cocktails” and, currently in production, “Barging Through Belgium.” Marilyn is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and teaches at PNCA. Fay has a platinum-certified “Backyard Habitat” and is a Master Recycler. Both were Artist-Bartenders-In-Residence at the Likewise Bar in Portland.
COST: $35
BRING: Please bring a good pencil to be included in the book itself. (Instructors recommend to eat a hearty breakfast as lunch will be postponed till after class.) Bring a sack lunch and/or snack for after class if you want. (hot tea and coffee provided).

Drawing as Seeing: The Figure, Nude & Costume with instructor Heather McLaughlin
Drawing is a way of seeing, a way of understanding, and an exercise. This workshop will utilize the human figure to explore spatial relationships, composition, contours and values. During this 4 hour workshop students will complete multiple small drawings and one long pose using traditional materials such as charcoal and conte crayon. The class will start with nude gestures and short nude poses. The final pose will be costumed. We will cover techniques for recording scale, light, and shapes while practicing mark making techniques and sharpening our ability to see our environment.

Plant Allies and Writing Rituals: Shifting into a New Year of Personal Resilience with Lara Pacheco & Abby Chroman
Create a practice for personal resilience in the year ahead, with simple medicinal herbs, a daily writing practice, and practical tools for dealing with a challenging world. We will explore a couple of plant allies and rituals to incorporate into daily life that include making a tea blend and a smudge stick. We will take a short walk to cultivate awareness of the elements and season and use this as a place to draw inspiration for a writing practice.
Lara Pacheco is a Taino, Latinx mamita that believes that our collective liberation is accessed through decolonizing ourselves by weaving ourselves into the web of ancestral medicine. Lara directly works through ancestral medicine with plants and fungi. When not caring for her family, land and all creatures, Lara runs Seed and Thistle Apothecary, an educational resource, and co runs the Seasonal Wellness Clinic that works to provide access to herbal medicine and massage for marginalized communities and Brown Girl Rise, a youth empowerment program for young femmes of color.
Abby Chroman is a Program Manager at Portland State University’s School of Business, where she helps launch and lead social impact and innovation initiatives. An MA candidate in Conflict Resolution, Abby is also a facilitator and trainer in conflict resolution, and collaborative process, for individuals, organizations and community groups. Before joining PSU Abby worked for five years with Ashoka, an international NGO, where she helped select and connect leading social entrepreneurs.
COST: $15-$20 sliding scale
BRING: Notebook and writing implement, comfortable clothes for being outside in the winter. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack (hot tea and coffee provided)
