Climactic Dialogue for the Climactic Story Teller: A Writing Workshop with Diana Kirk
Nov 3 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Fall/Winter 2018 Workshop Series

Climactic Dialogue for the Climactic Story Teller: A Writing Workshop with Diana Kirk

Dialogue is the difference between grey skies and perwinkle horizons. It’s the color, the peak, the cherry on the top of a banana split. It’s an accent to any story and it brings you from one of narration only to a multi-faceted quilt of characters and nuances that can only be found when characters speak outloud. Learn how to write using dialogue to tell your story or fold into an existing one. Find people’s voices, find your own.

In this four hour workshop, we’ll tell stories from our own lives and practice writing these into small vignettes or polaroids of dialogue leading to a climactic conclusion. When you leave, you’ll have the tools and confidence necessary to write other people’s words, to write your own words…with intent.

Diana Kirk is a liar, a hussy, a boss lady and a downright dirty dawg. Which means she’s a helluva writer. The author of Licking Flames: Tales of a Half-Assed Hussy and Nasty! has been published in Progessive magazine, Nailed, Psychology of It and has appeared on NPR. Her stories, her vignettes and her ramblings can be found all over social media and most nights at her 92 year old bar called Workers Tavern in Astoria, Oregon.

COST: $30 plus $13 material fee (includes book). Please pay material fee directly to the instructor.

BRING: Please bring paper and pen/pencil or other favorite writing method. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack. Coffee and tea provided.

This workshop is for students age 18 and up. Perfect for beginners. Perfect for essay writers. Novel writers. Whomever.

Ecstatic Dance with Scott Schaeffer
Nov 11 @ 11:00 am – 12:45 pm

Fall/Winter 2018 Workshop Series

Ecstatic Dance with Scott Schaeffer

Find the joy in moving your body, regardless of how it looks to others!

Ecstatic Dance is a term used to describe free form dance and in general describes transcendental, sacred dance, and other practices of movement meditation. Ecstatic Dance events are differentiated by being inclusive to all ages in a talk-free space with little to no direction on how members are supposed to dance.  While there is no single format or guidelines that all events called Ecstatic Dance adhere to, as a rule there is no talking, no cameras, and no judgement, thus creating a safe and open space where you can turn your mind off and be led by your heart and your rhythm.   There is only the pulsing beat of the music under the bright light of day, best greeted stone cold sober and ready to groove. Plan on moving your body in a music filled space in a way that is freeform to the uniqueness of you!

While not quite a workshop, Scott Schaeffer will facilitate this event with a brief introduction, definition and history, of this form of free-form dance. Then join in as Schaeffer plays a mix of world and electronic rhythm and beats for this event.

Scott Schaeffer lives in Portland, Oregon and is moved by music, love, and laughter. “Through dance, we believe everyone can discover, explore, unleash, and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. By engaging our senses and listening to our bodies, we connect to others and shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own.”

COST: $5

BRING: Wear comfortable clothes that allow your body to move without restriction and comfortable shoes that allow your feet to move on a smooth concrete floor.

All ages welcome. (Children must be accompanied by an adult if they are in attendance.)

Winter Solstice SoulCollage®: Letting the Light Back In with Josephine Banks
Dec 22 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Fall/Winter 2018 Workshop Series

Winter Solstice SoulCollage®: Letting the Light Back In with Josephine Banks

During this time of Winter Solstice as the amount of light we receive lengthens, we gather with the Lightbearer in mind. What is the Lightbearer to you? Who or what brings the light for you? Although not always seen, the light is always there. Let’s explore the ever present light using SoulCollage®.

SoulCollage® is an intuitive collage process for self-discovery and community developed by Seena B Frost. Tapping into the transformative power of imagination and intuition you will create personal collaged cards from images. The goal is to discover the unique inner and outer guides and challengers of your individual Souls, while in an environment that supports creativity and is safe for each person to explore and express his or her own unique soul in its lightness and shadow.

Josephine Banks, aka, Miss Begotten is a self-taught artist, writer, gardener, Domestic Goddess and SoulCollage® Facilitator living in Vancouver, WA. The beautiful Pacific Northwest and frequenting the Long Beach Peninsula as often as possible keeps her spirit alive, fresh and growing on a daily basis. Miss Begotten is currently sharing her art at The Bay Avenue Gallery in Ocean Park, WA. Using SoulCollage® I have found that pulling up bits and pieces of myself that have been locked away is a beautiful process. I find it enriching and healing to my life and that of others.

COST: $50

BRING: All supplies provided in addition to lunch; I will be sharing a pot of soup and some lovely bread. Please feel free to bring any snack you may need for the duration. Coffee, tea and water provided.

Cloud Stretch: A Meditative Poetry Workshop with Ana Anu
Jan 26 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Winter 2019 Workshop Series

Cloud Stretch: A Meditative Poetry Workshop with Ana Anu

I’ll first lead a guided somatic meditation, on theme with astrological happenings and current moon cycle, then open the meditation into a series of thematic questions, periods of meditative reflection, and written response. We’ll next spend some time in editing space…a time to refine and elaborate, stretch metaphors and challenge ourselves to dig deeper into our work and use of language. Here, we’ll reference the work of other poets, discussing poetic style and form.

We’ll then move into producing an 11X17 print of poetry. During this portion of the workshop, participants are invited to design and decorate a poem or an excerpt of their written work onto a one-of-a-kind print. We’ll close with sharing our work if so desired.

Ana Anu is a Portland based poet and multi-media artist. Her work seeks to reflect the state of the collective through mythology, natural cycles, deep intuition, and play. Her first published collection of poetry, Noon, explores the concept of big transitions whimsically and with heart. Her visual art collection explores intergenerational wild feminine in the abstract.

Still Life Painting Workshop with Kristen Flemington
Feb 2 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Winter 2019 Workshop Series

Still Life Painting Workshop with Kristen Flemington

Portland based painter Kristen Flemington will lead an informative and experiential painting workshop exploring the fundamentals of still-life painting. We will review the basics of color theory and painting techniques, practice a few brief painting exercises, then complete a small still life painting that participants can take home with them. This workshop is a great introduction to painting or an excellent opportunity to flex well-formed artistic skills. We will be painting with acrylic paint. Supplies will be provided, but if participants would like to bring their own supplies, they are more than welcome to.

Kristen paints what’s around her: her friends and family, flowers, sometimes just the fruit off her counter top. She tries to capture these things simply, in honest and ordinary moments, hoping that, seen in this natural way and with the heart, something of their power or beauty might stand out. Kristen Flemington studied painting at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and now does so in her studio in Portland, Oregon. She has hosted painting workshops over the past 4 years at Sou’wester and in her home city.

COST: $30 (plus a $10 material fee) Please pay material fee directly to the instructor.

BRING: Please wear clothes that are ok to get paint on. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack. Coffee and hot tea provided.

Story is a Chance: Writing as Spiritual Practice
Feb 23 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Winter 2019 Workshop Series

Story is a Chance: Writing as Spiritual Practice with instructor Melissa Bennett

Gerald Vizenor (Anishinaabe) wrote, “Life is a chance, a story is a chance. That I am here is a chance.” Our lives are miracles tied to the lives of our ancestors and to the lives of our descendants. All of the moments, big and small, that brought us to this point have meaning and significance. In this workshop, we will utilize sitting and walking meditation practices as a way to slow down and take time to listen deeply to our own stories. We will utilize writing practice as a means of exploring the many chances our ancestors took to bring us to this moment, the chances we have taken to bring us to now, and how these chances impact the stories of our own lives and the lives of those who come after us. We will share our work with each other, trusting in the chance to create change in the world and imagine new possibilities for our future.

Melissa Bennett (Umatilla/Nimiipuu/Sac & Fox/Anishinaabe), M.Div. is a writer, storyteller, educator, and spiritual care provider. Twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Melissa’s work focuses on social justice, culture, tradition, and spirituality.
