Bitches of the Sun is an Oregon based trio founded in winter of 2017 by Willamette Week award winning vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Davis. After the session saxophonist made his way to the Pacific Northwest from Chicago, Illinois he decided to push his musical boundary and play his hand at being a front-man. In efforts to find a refreshing new sound that embodied traditional rock elements he was introduce to bassist Nick Wright and drummer Seth Shaler. Together this powerhouse has an extensive resume of individual features and group performances with the likes of Wyclef Jean, Mac Miller, Chance the Rapper and Buddy Guy. Described by its loyal fan base as “Portland’s rock band” the trio uses it’s diverse musical background to deliver a large selection of body shaking grooves wrapped in emotionally complex arrangements guaranteed to get everyone on the dance floor.
Every performance gifts the audience with unforgettable moments that can only be envied by those who missed out. And with the release of their 2018 self-titled Bitches of the Sun EP they are proving to be a force of limitless growth and longevity.

Fox and Bones are the modern day Bonnie and Clyde, if Bonnie and Clyde had driven a Volvo and played folk pop music. Based in Portland, OR, these internationally touring sweethearts aren’t your average duo. Rather than simply documenting their experiences in song, Sarah Vitort and Scott Gilmore write from the perspective of quasi-fictional characters, Fox and Bones. The two fall for each other, decide to hit the road, and never look back. The pair uses music as the canvas on which they paint a new life together that defies traditional relationship roles and life goals. Their music is modern with retro stylings; it is ripe with vocal harmonies that pull at the heartstrings, and a complex, at times metaphysical, lyrical landscape. Each element serves their stories of a life lived on the road in pursuit of a dream that most never have the courage to chase.

Andie Sterling is a “west Texas born and raised, westward wanderer” currently living in Astoria, Oregon. She received her MFA in Sculpture/Installation from the University of North Texas and recently completed her Residency via Astoria Visual Arts. Andie Sterling’s work includes site specific installation, space design, public art, murals and performance collaboration.
This trailer is a 1960’s Aloha made in Aloha, Oregon. It was rescued from a neglected RV park in the northern part of the Long Beach Peninsula. Now repaired and transformed into an art space, this art gallery is part of our Artist Residency Program and our non-profit organization, Sou’wester Arts.

GREEN HILLS ALONE
…I am going to my own hearth-stone,
Bosomed in yon green hills alone,
A secret nook in a pleasant land,
Whose groves the frolic fairies planned…
Songwriter Chris Miller, along with collaborators Mark Robertson and Weezy Ford, explore new sounds following Sleepy Volcano’s 2014 Green Hills Alone full-length release. Expanding on themes of death, epiphany and transformation, the new material draws lyrical inspiration from the Tao te Ching and eschews guitar in favor of layered keyboards and upbeat rhythms. Miller, who’s performed as Green Hills Alone since 2003, released a self-titled EP in his home town of Redding that year. He moved to Portland in 2009, and eventually recorded and released the aforementioned 2014 full-length. 2019 will begin the next chapter of Green Hills Alone with new recorded music and more tour dates.

MILLER CARR
Miller Carr released 3 full length albums in the 2000s while fronting the California band Shalants. The Shalants played shows all across the US and Europe. In 2015, Carr released, ‘Trickster in Exile,’ the first in a planned trilogy of of recorded work. This was followed in 2017 by ‘Babylon Swans,’ both available on vinyl and digital through Valerian Records. The final installment of the trilogy will be released 2019.

Winter 2019 Workshop Series
Cloud Stretch: A Meditative Poetry Workshop with Ana Anu
I’ll first lead a guided somatic meditation, on theme with astrological happenings and current moon cycle, then open the meditation into a series of thematic questions, periods of meditative reflection, and written response. We’ll next spend some time in editing space…a time to refine and elaborate, stretch metaphors and challenge ourselves to dig deeper into our work and use of language. Here, we’ll reference the work of other poets, discussing poetic style and form.
We’ll then move into producing an 11X17 print of poetry. During this portion of the workshop, participants are invited to design and decorate a poem or an excerpt of their written work onto a one-of-a-kind print. We’ll close with sharing our work if so desired.
Ana Anu is a Portland based poet and multi-media artist. Her work seeks to reflect the state of the collective through mythology, natural cycles, deep intuition, and play. Her first published collection of poetry, Noon, explores the concept of big transitions whimsically and with heart. Her visual art collection explores intergenerational wild feminine in the abstract.
COST: $40
BRING: favorite writing, drawing, illustrating setup/tools. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack depending on your lunch schedule. Hot tea and coffee provided.

Winter 2019 Workshop Series
Still Life Painting Workshop with Kristen Flemington
Portland based painter Kristen Flemington will lead an informative and experiential painting workshop exploring the fundamentals of still-life painting. We will review the basics of color theory and painting techniques, practice a few brief painting exercises, then complete a small still life painting that participants can take home with them. This workshop is a great introduction to painting or an excellent opportunity to flex well-formed artistic skills. We will be painting with acrylic paint. Supplies will be provided, but if participants would like to bring their own supplies, they are more than welcome to.
Kristen paints what’s around her: her friends and family, flowers, sometimes just the fruit off her counter top. She tries to capture these things simply, in honest and ordinary moments, hoping that, seen in this natural way and with the heart, something of their power or beauty might stand out. Kristen Flemington studied painting at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and now does so in her studio in Portland, Oregon. She has hosted painting workshops over the past 4 years at Sou’wester and in her home city.
COST: $30 (plus a $10 material fee) Please pay material fee directly to the instructor.
BRING: Please wear clothes that are ok to get paint on. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack. Coffee and hot tea provided.
Great for beginners or more experienced painters who want to hone their skills. This class is for students age 12 years and up. 15 students max.

In between tours, burgeoning Portland indie songwriter, MAITA has quietly chipped away at her debut full length, recorded in part at the Ok Theatre in Enterprise, Oregon, and in Portland (to be released in 2019). MAITA’s 2018 Tiny Desk contest entry was featured on NPR. The album sees MAITA expanding upon her previous indie-folk sound, taking up the electric guitar. Thus far, singles off the album have been featured on Tender Loving Empire’s “Friends of Friends” compilation, Vortex’s Magazine’s annual vinyl release, and the Picklefest vinyl compilation. Following a month long tour of Europe, MAITA returned to the states to perform at Treefort in Boise, Wildwood Music Festival in Willamina, Oregon, and Modest Music Festival in Moscow, Idaho!

The Art of Seasonal Nourishment: An Ayurvedic “Cook, Learn & Eat” Dinner Party with Elyssia Maya Schaeffer

Elyssia Maya Schaeffer is a Certified Ayurveda and Yoga Teacher, Holistic Nutritionist and Certified Wellness Coach living in Portland, Oregon with her fun loving husband and two cheeky chihuahuas. Elyssia found Ayurveda – the medical system of Ancient India, which translated from Sanskrit means “the knowledge of life” – through Yoga. After years of asana practice, she was drawn to the philosophical side of the Yoga tradition and from here was introduced to the sister science of Yoga – Ayurveda. In addition to teaching workshops and offering private consultations in Portland, Elyssia co-runs the monthly Center for Ayurveda and Yoga Study Clinic with a mentor and colleague.
