Old school punk rock rolls into the Sou’wester!
“Calvin Johnson (born November 1, 1962) is an American guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, music producer, and disc jockey born in Olympia, Washington, US.[1] Known for his uniquely deep, droning singing voice, Johnson was a founding member of the bands Cool Rays, Beat Happening, The Go Team, Dub Narcotic Sound System, and The Halo Benders. Calvin Johnson is also the founder and owner of the influential indie label K Records, and has been cited as a major player in the beginning of the modern independent music movement.[2] As a prominent figure in the Olympia music scene, he was one of the major organizers of the seminal International Pop Underground Convention.” Wikipedia

“To all our friends old and new,
The Young Pioneers- a punk rock, pop band formed in Olympia Washington in the fall of 1982 by Chris Pugh, Scott Vanderpool, Chris Gloekler and myself, Bradley Sweek, with Brian Learned replacing Mr. Gloekler in January 1983. We played extensively in the Northwest from 1982 until 1987 writing and arranging all our own material. We have remained fast friends for all these years as we pursued music projects with other bands. Scott, Chris, Bry continued to play extensively while Brad dropped out of music entirely in the early nineties.
Fast forward to 2012 when we decided to start playing again (mostly because we love and missed each others company). We picked up a new addition, Colm Meek on the synths which has been the perfect thing. Chris and I have been rather prolific writing new songs at a decent pace so with Colm’s expertise on the controls, we have be doing a lot of recording as well. Bryan Learned pilot training has taken him away to Florida for many months so we have been very lucky to have Nathan Paul filling in on bass. At this point we have decided to be a bit more public about what we are up to.
I hope you enjoy the new songs and arrangements as much as we do. We will start playing out more, posting information on our upcoming record and other fun facts here.

Selector Dub Narcotic is the pseudonym of choice for Calvin Johnson when he is re-mixing records for the Dub Narcotic Disco Plate series, or engaged in spinning records at a party or other literary functions. Drawing largely from a stack of 45 rpm phonograph records, Selector Dub Narcotic is known to mix the genres dancehall, soul, punk, garage, R&B, rock steady, bubblegum and rockabilly with assorted curiosities of the current underground music scene.
The Oklahoma born songwriter with Choctaw heritage, Samantha Crain, presents her newest collection of songs, “Under Branch & Thorn & Tree”. Teaming up again with producer, John Vanderslice (the Mountain Goats, Spoon), they’ve used synthesizers and string arrangements to embellish the heartfelt stories of the working class.
Crain’s songs are full of expansive melodies that veer off in unpredictable directions, with lyrics that explore conflicting emotions with uncommon insight and compassion. She has a jazz singer’s phrasing, often breaking words into rhythmic fragments that land before and after the beat, stretching syllables or adding grace notes to uncover hidden nuances in her lyrics.

with Crabbing Expert Jason Thorne & Tour of Oysterville Sea Farms
Sat Jan 23 10am – 2pm
Learn all you ever wanted to know about Crabbing and Oystering on this guided hands-on tour! Join local crabbing expert Jason Thorne where he will show us how to bait, and set the various styles of traps/pots. Jason will talk about morphology, tides and the art of timing involved with catching crabs. At Oysterville Sea Farms, the oldest in operation, we will tour the cannery and learn more about the life-cycle & aqua-culture while enjoying freshly shucked oysters, and hot tea (sack lunch from Surfer Sands available for pre-purchase). Shuck and taste a wonderful oyster fresh from the bay! Then we’ll pull up a pot from the dock at the Port of Peninsula in Nahcotta . Bring our catch back to the Sou’wester and learn how to cook, clean and EAT these beautiful dungeness crabs!
Cost: $30 and includes crab & oysters and hot tea. Optional sack lunch from Surfer Sands, available for purchase, $7.50 pre-ordered through the Sou’wester (find menu on Surfer Sands FB page).
Meet: inside the lodge at the Sou’wester at 10am sharp and we will carpool to the bay after a brief introduction. (Coffee and Tea Provided.)

Zeb Dewar is a Folk/Rock/Americana band based in Portland, Oregon and has released 6 records over the last 10 years, most recently a Greatest Hits compilation now out on Curly Cassettes! Upright bass, violin and perchance cello….a fun and mellow night with Graves joining the eve!
Zeb has toured the USA, played the Nelsonville Music Festival, opened for Samantha Crain, and shared bills with Michael Hurley, Run On Sentence, Clarke & The Himselfs.
Greg Olin used to play in a band called York Roberts. Today, “Graves” is only subtly different from “The Graves”, the nomenclature which accompanied Olin’s debut Love Love Love. The evoltion of the music and the moniker is somewhat telling. Like so many HUSH artists, Olin specializes in a songwriting style which can be reduced to its minimum components — vocal and guitar — and still work. But life is too short and friends/musicians are too plenty not to enhance the writing with a more traditional band sound: drums, bass, keys, horns, etc. With Yes Yes Okay Okay, Olin has discovered a perfect synthesis of intimate songwriting with enhanced, rule breaking instrumentation that one usually associates with the likes of Wilco and others. Perhaps more than ever, Olin’s music sounds like the man behind it: utterly sincere, slightly off kilter, instantly likable. In a way, stripping “The Graves” of “The” is an indicator of the systematic dismantling of pretension that is at work in these songs.

Bubbaville is a 501c3 non-profit, all-volunteer arts organization that supports old-time music and dance in Portland, Oregon. Donations to Bubbaville help to guarantee such events as “The Portland Old-Time Music Gathering” and the “Dare To Be Square – West!” dance calling workshop. We provide some financial and logistical backing for musical endeavors that we have determined to be important to the further development and enrichment of the local old-time music community.

Join us in welcoming Bart Budwig and Luke Ydstie (of Blind Pilot). Bart Budwig grew up on the Idaho Palouse, with a pawn shop trumpet and a heart as big as a skyscraper – if skyscrapers knew how to be humble. “I can’t say enough about this man’s songwriting….imagine riding on a wagon, heading off into the sunset with the one you love while you’re whiskey drunk, and a charming old cowboy rides alongside the wagon and croons about lost love and how he once had to shoot a man down. Bryan John Appleby is a jacuzzi pop singer-songwriter living in Seattle, WA. Appleby’s much anticipated forthcoming full-length release The Narrow Valley (November 2015), crafted with Seattle producer Sam Anderson, deals with the sun-bleached landscape of his youth – a dreamy, densely constructed cinematic world more musically tied to the maximalist West Coast pop traditions of outsider California composers like Van Dyke Parks and Brian Wilson than to the folk roots of Appleby’s early work. The Narrow Valley‘s orchestral character takes dramatic steps away from heartfelt folk balladry, showcasing Appleby’s deftness in composition and arrangement while still managing to deliver the epic line-by-line lyricism he is known for.

The treatments are primarily on the front of the body and mainly on distal points (legs, arms, hands, feet, ears, etc.). You will zone out and relax in a nice comfy chair for an hour or so. Come with any questions you have. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points. Don’t eat large meals just before or after your visit. Representatives from Mountain and Sea, a Portland based importer of single-source Taiwanese oolong teas, discuses the history of the gongfu tea ceremony before teaching participants the gongfu tea ceremony in celebration of the new year.
Gongfu tea is a traditional art that is reserved for the preparation of the finest quality teas. Gongfu (aka kungfu) tea literally means, “making tea with skill” and refers to the refinement needed to extract the balanced aromatics and flavor notes of the different types of tea. Water quality, vessel selection, proper temperature and steep time are some of the essentials of this art form. We will use pure spring water from the Oregon Coast Range to steep three varietals from famed tea producing regions:
- 2015 Gao Shan Oolong | High Mountain Oolong (Nantou, Taiwan)
- 2015 Zheng Yan Qi Lan | Wuyi Orchid Oolong (Fujian, China)
- 1998 Aged Puer (Yunnan, China)

Mountain and Sea was created by Nicholas and Nora Grod with the desire to share in the beauty of traditional tea arts that has pervaded East Asian culture for centuries. Nora’s Taiwanese family has been involved high mountain oolong tea industry for over thirty years and it is through this connection that we are able to have direct access to their tea farm in Central Taiwan. For the past decade, Nicholas and Nora have been students of Master Wu Zhongxian, whose teachings include Daoist internal martial arts, Yijing divination, Four Pillar astrology, brush calligraphy and more. The gongfu tea ceremony is another embodiment of these ancient practices because the nature of steeping tea in this way forces one to slow down and be mindful.
Lantern Launch 5:30pm

Join us as we launch a singe paper lantern up into the night sky to celebrate this Chinese New Year! All are invited to write a New Year intention, thought, poem or phrase on the lantern before lighting and launching it into the sky after sunset.
