Westmoreland and Lilly Miller: Presented by Sou’wester Arts
 
Westmoreland, is the project of Seattle-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Zach Alva. Latino Ballroom, the debut LP, was recorded in a week in Silsbee, TX, the album deals with the passing of his father and examines his feelings surrounding grief, family, and love. The record’s sound is steeped in a wide range of cultural influences, including folk-rock, jazz, and country, with the title referencing his experience as an Indigenous and Latino artist creating in what are predominantly white music spaces. By exploring these themes, Zach has produced an incredibly personal yet complex album. What might seem simple on the surface will quickly reveal a profound depth of emotion and history in a way that is both accessible and self-revealing for the listener. With Latino Ballroom, Westmoreland firmly establishes himself as a songwriter with the rare eye for detail and someone who understands their craft— one who we will undoubtedly talk about for years to come.
 
Seattle based musician Lilly Miller has spent the last year working on her first EP, entitled The Fool. Influenced by Joni Mitchell and the melodic tones of Nick Drake, her songs are known for their tenderness and deep feelings.

Elizabeth Margit-Anne is the frontwoman of Lili St Anne, a Santa Fe-based art-folk trio that combines the excitement of psychedelic rock with the groundedness of Elizabeth’s folk songwriting. When performing solo, Elizabeth shares the intimacy of her songwriting with grit and grace, exploring themes of love, loss, and grief with a heart-swelling verve. For fans of Laura Gibson, Big Thief, and Sharon Van Etten. Elizabeth grew up coming to Seaview many times a year, and the Sou’Wester holds a very special place in her heart. Jeremy James Meyer is an artificer of song. A songwriter’s songwriter. He crafts redemptive songs full of woody rock ‘n’ roll tones. His deep, penetrating voice has a wide range, and is especially captivating in his droning, lower register. He spent the last decade drifting around, a tool belt troubadour, working carpentry by day, bringing folk music to the people at night. As with most well traveled songwriters it’s hard to tell where the road ends and Jeremy James Meyer begins. His songs seamlessly blend plain-language and poetic lyricism. They wander from personal truth to outlaw legends. He’s capable of cathartic protest songs, cosmic country canticles, and dive bar sing-a-longs. Whenever, and however your path crosses with Jeremy James Meyer’s (and it will) prepare for an enchanting, psychedelic trip through cosmic American music.

Come rest, relax, and heal in the coastal forest with others in the pavilion space at the Sou’wester in Seaview, Washington on Friday, June 14th, 10-2pm with lara pacheco. $25-$55 sliding scale.

This in-person event will take place at the beautiful Sou’wester Historic Lodge. lara pacheco, a licensed acupuncturist, will be providing community acupuncture as a way of making acupuncture more accessible. Community acupuncture is also a way that multiple people are able to relax in a communal space and share in the wide array of benefits that this ancient medicine provides. Acupuncture can treat anything from depression, anxiety, any kind of pain, digestion, sleep issues, and chronic conditions to also providing overall support for general well being. People can expect to rest anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on what your body needs and what you are comfortable with. Come experience this simple, yet powerful medicine with community and as an addition to being surrounded by the coast and forest.

Please bring a whatever you need to relax (blanket, mat, cushions). Please dress in comfortable layers and be prepared to roll up pants up to knees and long sleeves that roll up to the elbow and to remove socks and shoes for treatment.

  • How does this work? Sign up for a time slot. Tickets will be available in 15 minute slots. You’ll sign up for some short paper work, then find a spot, roll up sleeves and pant legs if that is comfortable for you and lara will start treatment.
  • How long do I stay? Depends. At least 30 minutes is recommended but listening to your body’s needs is most important. Sometimes people fall asleep and sometimes they don’t, but what is most important is that they relax.

Live Music: Eugenia Riot

Portland, Oregon based songwriter Leigh Jones makes a dazzling turn with her latest folk creation: Eugenia Riot. The name was taken from her eldest-known female ancestor, who was born in the year 1205 in Yorkshire, England. An internationally touring musician with a background in theater, Jones delights audiences with her irresistible stage presence and enrapturing voice. She has spoken at the US Embassy in Ethiopia on Women in Music, was selected with her former band Crow and the Canyon for the American Music Abroad program, and has toured the US from coast to coast since 2010.  

She grew up in North Carolina and went on to earn a drama degree from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her time immersed in the diversity of NYC’s music scene sparked a passion for songwriting, and she was eventually lured to the magic of the Pacific Northwest, where continued to maximize her versatility as a musician. With her former bands, bluegrass outfit Crow and the Canyon, and harmony-driven folk trio Five Letter Word, Jones moved easily from strings to percussion, occasionally throwing on tap shoes to round out a performance. 

Her pandemic-born solo project, Eugenia Riot, explores the crescendos of love, heartache, and the human condition through infectious melodies and a self-examining pen. Featuring Abby Gundersen (Phoebe Bridgers, Noah Gundersen) on strings, Eugenia Riot’s debut album, Can’t Wait To Miss You, is both gentle and fierce, playful and romantic – an engaging blend of folk, rock, and pop.

Natural Pigment Making: Local Foraging to Create Plant-Based Watercolors. In this workshop, we will make watercolor paints from plants found in the area around Sou’wester. During day 1, we will ethically forage local plants and begin the process of extracting their color.  We will also prepare a container for our finished paints.  In the second day, participants will learn how to filter out pigment and use it to create watercolor.  Each participant will leave with a set of watercolor paints created from the colors of the Sou’wester landscape.

Born and raised in Portland, Paige was introduced to ceramics at a young age to help with deficiencies in mainstream academia. She found her stride in making the human form, taking it into college, and earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Ceramics. In a constant pursuit to expand her practice, she has participated in many residences in the US and abroad. This passion led her to take ceramic-centric jobs such as production potter, glaze department supervisor, and adjunct ceramic faculty. Currently, she teaches weekly Ceramics classes and Workshops at Radius Ceramic Studio and in her own classroom The Wright Clay Studio in Portland.

Jessica Hoffman was born in Portland, OR, grew up in Southeastern Virginia, spent a few formative years in Washington, DC, nearly a decade in Philadelphia, PA, and currently lives and works in Seattle, WA.

Jessica received her BFA in Photography from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC and her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She currently teaches in the Fine Arts Department at Seattle Central College. Along with her partner, Justin Quinlan, Jessica runs Paper Press Punch, a print studio and bindery focused on producing Risograph printed comics, prints, and artist books.

Jessica’s work investigates memory, obsessive behaviors, and interactions between people and communication technology. Her installations include work in several mediums, among them video, photography, books, and printmaking. Jessica has previously been a resident artist at In Cahoots in Petaluma, CA and Trailer Blaze Comics Residency at Sou’Wester through Short Run. Her work has received numerous awards, including an Artist Trust GAP Grant and Pratt Fine Arts Center Fellowship. She has exhibited throughout the US, including at SOIL Gallery and with Interstitial in Seattle, Antenna Gallery in New Orleans, Center for Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia, and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in Wilmington. Jessica serves as an Advisory Board Member for Short Run Seattle.

Traditional Japanese Shibori Dying and Sashiko Stitching Workshop

On Saturday 4/6, You will learn about traditional Japanese methods of Shibori dying and then we will put that learning into practice! You will learn how to prepare the indigo dye bath, bind, fold, stitch or otherwise block the fabric to create a pattern, then prepare and dye your pieces. Each person will have the chance to try several methods.

On Sunday 4/7 You will use the Shibori fabric pieces you made to practice the traditional Japanese art of Sashiko stitching. You can bring something to repair or embellish such as jeans or a canvas fabric item, or you can create a work of art to be hung, framed or used for a future project. You can do a basic running stitch pattern or you can use a pattern of your choosing.

Wheel Throwing Fundamentals (getting centered) and hand building exploration. During the two week course we will be developing beginner skills and techniques for wheel thrown ceramics. This course is designed so give each student 1:1 time to learn how to wheel throw. Between individual wheel throwing sessions with the instructor student will be creating hand built objects and are encouraged explore the properties of clay as a medium. Students will likely bring home 1-2 cylindrical objects and a variety of hand built items.

Ally Bruser is an elementary school art teacher, artist, and mother living in southwest Washington, on the unceded territory of the Chinook Nation. Most of her ceramics are handbuilt using Nerikomi techniques — the process of pressing and folding multiple colors of clay together and then rolling them into slabs. In this 2 day candelabra workshop we will be touching on form and function. Candelabras traditionally are tall candle holders for taper candles – the height of both help illuminate a space. We will cover rolling coils, shaping and designing our forms on the first day. On the second day of class we will refine our taper holders and assemble everything to create our candelabras. This class is great for beginners and experienced folks alike.

T. Stefanski / Taylor Stefanski is a ceramicist living in Seattle, WA.

Their work is deeply inspired by the sea. Explores ideas of imperfection and honors the nature of the tides through meditative repetition. Expressed in the chosen hand-building process – each of their pieces are created primarily using a coil-building technique. Where she rolls each coil by hand to create each unique, one-of-a-kind forms.

Graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a focus on printmaking and sculpture. Their ceramic work is carried in a variety of stores in Seattle, Portland, and LA. She currently works and teaches in her studio in Capitol Hill.

Who says cups have to be strictly utilitarian or sculptural and not both? I am a firm believer in usable art and I love to dive into this mentality with one of our most used objects, the cup! In this workshop, your instructor, Ashley Campbell of The Beige Motel will show you the wonderful ways to use mason stains to color your clay. We will be discussing marbling and inlay techniques to create colorful patterns and then use templates, cutters, and molds to create our vessels. Each student can expect to create a pair of colorful cups to take home.

Ashley Corpuz Campbell is a Filipino-American ceramic artist. Her work is deeply influenced by her childhood experiences and the loneliness felt growing up as a mixed-race kid in 90s suburbia. It has become a major theme in her work and she gathers color inspiration and imagery from the myriad of cartoons and TV shows she watched as a kid. Ashley works mostly in porcelain, using a variety of pigments to stain her clay. She utilizes bright colors mixed with pastel tones to create playful landscapes with a maximalist mentality.

Where Grief, Gratitude, and Beauty Coexist.

Come join us as we delve into the art of breaking and mending. Participants will choose a bowl to break and mend as a ceremonial metaphor for the woundings of life and the beauty that comes from its broken places. The act of breaking a bowl and mending the “scars” with gold is based on the Japanese art of Kintsugi. Kintsugi teaches us we cannot go back to the way we were before, but instead move forward with our woundings and the beauty they can bring. Students will leave with a ceramic bowl with golden mended fault lines as a reminder of the places where grief, gratitude, and beauty coexist, as well as the opportunity to reframe old ideas about loss and adversity. Workshop fee includes ceremony, instruction, bowls, and all materials.

Glenda “GG” Goodrich is an artist, art doula, author, and SoulCollage(r) facilitator living in Salem, OR. GG works one-on-one and with groups to create opportunities for people to explore their intuitive creative potential. Her students describe her teaching style as fun, warm and supportive. She recently published her first book, Solo Passage: 13 Quests, 13 Questions (available wherever books are sold), which is a testament to the healing and restorative powers of nature illustrated through stories about her vision questing experiences in the wild over a 20-year period.

Sculpted Hats: Wet Felted Millinery Workshop (FULL)

Working with Pacific Northwest grown wool roving and olive oil soap, each student will shape and create a custom felted hat. Learn how to make a hood pattern and felt in 3D using a wet resist. Blocking and shaping will be done with the assistance of a variety of unique hat molds to choose from. As well as your head. Make sure to bring dry extra clothes. This class will clean everything but potentially leave your sleeves and collar a little water logged. Olive oil soap makes this felting class a good choice for sensitive skin or allergies.

Mikal Robinson is a queer alterly abled inspired felter, fiber artist, and educator. The lead instructor for Feral Felt and Wild Child Arts Education for over 17 years. Creating containers for shared learning and enthusiasm wherever they roam.

They have been sharing their love of hand crafts and honoring them as a fine art since childhood. Always encouraging people to remember the vital importance of supporting and maintaining our fibersheds.
