Healer’s Respite: Return to Love

with Fawn Williams

For those whose life calling is to help others, it is vital to find solace. Delight in the vessel of your own body beside the ocean waves. Commune with other empaths and healers, stoke the fires of your passion to help, and heal yourself by slowing down. Learn about self-care through Ayurvedic wisdom and Yoga Therapy, unlock creativity and inner bliss through somatic play, tap into yoga philosophy as Social Justice, practice therapeutic yoga.

Open to therapists, teachers, activists, caregivers, and other non-professional helpers. Optional to practice silence to rest your voice. Registered Yoga Teachers receive Continuing Education.

Each day begins with movement games, warm ups, and prompts to orient and stimulate your highest self, including a complete Hatha yoga exploration to root you in presence. Afternoons are yours to enjoy the Garden Spa and Finnish Sauna, comb the beach, get a tarot reading, and explore the Peninsula. Evenings are devoted to conversations around applied Yoga and Ayurvedic philosophy, and writing. We close every day with a body-based meditation, and yoga practice to soothe the nervous system, and prepare your body for deep rest.

Let That Shift Go!

Cultivating Compassion During Shifty Times

with Shanna Gillette

Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” But changing our old habits and patterns can be challenging. Just like your car or smartphone, the better you understand how to operate something, the more efficiently it will work. Your body and mind are no different. Ancient yogic science knows we are all connected and we need each other now more than ever. Happiness is not some destination to reach for outside of ourselves. True inner peace lies within.

Western medicine teaches us that mind, body & spirit are all separate entities. Our individualistic culture disconnects us from nature, from each other, and from ourselves. We’ve been taught to devalue community and cooperation and to favor competition. But the times they are a changing – quickly.

Are you ready to begin the journey back home to yourself?

During this retreat, learn ancient yogic techniques mixed with mindfulness and proven methods to connect to our divine essence through the art of embodied movement. We will create a caring, non-judgmental space for somatic exploration; a safe container to explore grounding energies, heart-centered movement, and our own natural rhythms through gentle guided instruction. One part physical, one part mental, and one part open-hearted exploration, this retreat will reconnect your mind, body & spirit to help to awaken you to your true potential without limitations. Find your breath. Express your truth. Learn to become the master of your own mind. Transform the weight you’ve been carrying into something new. Join us for three amazing days designed to help you emerge from the ashes and let that shift go.

Offerings will include:

Daily yoga and guided meditation, movement methods for somatic release, neuroscience & mindfulness education, individual therapeutic sessions, stress reduction techniques, restorative yoga in the evenings by candlelight, nature walks and beach time during the day & healthy meals cooked together (optional).

Shanna Gillette is a certified yoga instructor, empowerment coach, intuitive guide and motivational speaker. She holds a degree in consciousness studies and has an extensive background in neuroscience, meditative techniques, theology, and more recently, conscious dance. She has been facilitating classes and workshops for the last two years throughout Washington and Oregon guiding people through the process of becoming aware of their own destructive, repetitive thinking patterns/habits along with tangible, practical methods to reprogram for more happiness and success. “Basically,” she says, “I teach people how to be nicer to themselves.”  She is available for private sessions, group & corporate workshops, retreats and on-line at

Summer 2019 Wellness Retreat Series

Lunar Being

with Suzy Olsen

Under the waxing crescent moon, we will gather for a multiple day retreat focused on accessing the depths of our lunar selves. This retreat is designed to teach us how to better live in sync with the lunar cycles as well as with our own ‘lunar being’.

Each attendee will be given a copy of their natal astrological chart. The natal chart will be used to decipher the role of the moon in your life, as well as the complexities and uniqueness of your moon self. Through various teachings and activities, we will uncover how each of us can better utilize the powers of our moon beings in our daily lives to achieve greater fulfillment and wellness.

In astrology, the moon represents our inner realm and what we value most. Our innermost desires are reflected in the moon, as well as the secrets to unlocking those desires. La luna is the sacred hunter of the zodiac, feeding our soul what it needs most. Ever changing, the moon is elusive and mysterious. By better understanding the moon, we bring ourselves closer to harmonizing body, mind and spirit.

“ When you don’t follow your nature there is a hole in the universe where you were supposed to be.”  – Dane Rudhyar

Expect to learn about and experience the following:

  • Your personal natal astrological chart. You must know your exact birth time.
  • Moon technology: How to work with lunar cycles and ritual to positively influence your life and well being.
  • How the moon guides your life purpose and personal fulfillment.
  • Sacred lunar traditions and rituals.
  • Create your own unique magical moon ‘talisman’.

This retreat is open to people with all levels of experience and curiosity. If you have an interest in astrology and developing a deeper understanding of your ‘inner workings’, this experience is sure to be both inspiring and enriching.

Suzy Olsen is the creator and owner of Chariot, a spiritually focused housewares boutique and design studio located in Astoria, Oregon. In 2011, she officially began her career as a professional tarot reader and astrologer. These days, she performs private readings and several spiritual workshops from her store location. Her intuitive readings give insights on personal growth and healing, and her specialty is uncovering ‘hidden’ truths that may empower and inspire her clients.

In early childhood, she first noticed a strong connection to unseen forces, and began researching various occult subjects. Studying astrology has been a lifelong passion, beginning in the early teenage years.  After training with numerous astrologers over the years, Suzy has combined both traditional and modern astrological methods in her practice. Many of her astrological techniques come from the ancient Hellenistic period, stemming back thousands of years.

Perhaps because she is ruled by the moon, she feels especially drawn to working with the lunar energies for personal development and ritual. She has hosted several astrology moon workshops at Chariot, writes a monthly ‘new moon newsletter’ and regularly hosts magical seasonal retreats in Nehalem, OR.

Summer 2019 Wellness Retreat Series

Expansive Alignment: Committing to Your Vision

with Renee Sills

Just one week after the Autumn Equinox and supported by the auspicious beginning of a waxing crescent moon in Libra, we’ll gather together for an immersive exploration of Embodied Astrology and the personal and collective potentials of Jupiter’s upcoming transit through Capricorn.

Jupiter in Capricorn (December 2019 – December 2020) is an invitation to trust the future by actively shaping it. In astrology, Jupiter is a planet associated with optimism, good-fortune, vision, life purpose, broadening perspectives/horizons, philosophy, self-improvement and positive consciousness. Capricorn is a sign that helps us all to materialize on the earthly plane, confront and move through obstacles, grow stronger through challenges we face and manifest our ambitions. Jupiter’s transit through Capricorn happens once every twelve years, but in 2020 this transit will combine with several other long-term influences making it an important, and potentially pivotal time for personal and collective healing, transformation and development.

Regardless of your sun sign, each person’s natal chart includes Jupiter and Capricorn as active and important influences. Working with your own natal placements allows you to understand how this upcoming transit will affect you specifically and will give you clues, tools and timing for working most effectively with its challenges and opportunities.

This unique retreat combines astrological method and how-to, movement, meditation, somatic healing practices, and creative, intuitive journeying. You will:

  • Learn practical skills for astrological chart analysis and gain a deep understanding of how Jupiter and Capricorn work in your natal chart.
  • Be guided through intuitive and accessible mind/body explorations that will help reveal, clarify and synthesize your personal vision and life purpose, creative offerings and soul-commitments.
  • Craft a personal manifestation design for the next year that works most effectively with the exciting and powerful astrology of 2020 and Jupiter’s transit through Capricorn.
  • Enjoy a healing and regenerative retreat with a fun group of vibrant individuals on the beautiful Washington coast at a one-of-a-kind, female/queer-owned and operated retreat center where you can walk/cycle on the beach, use the Finnish Sauna, peruse the art gallery and pause in the wellness space!

Steady & Clear: Kundalini Yoga & Meditation @ Sou'wester Lodge and Vintage Travel Trailer Resort
Feb 28 @ 6:00 pm – Mar 1 @ 12:00 pm
Winter/Spring 2020 Wellness Retreat Series

Steady & Clear:

Kundalini Yoga and Meditation for the Flow of
Your Life

with Laurel Clohessy

This retreat is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the joy, transformation, and rejuvenation of Kundalini Yoga, sacred chant, and creativity as you discover and return to the HOME that is your true self. Whether you are an experienced yogi, or this is your first time practicing Kundalini Yoga, you can benefit from this practice. Kundalini Yoga and meditation, as taught by Yogi Bhajan is for anyone and everyone. Just breathe, and lean in the right direction and you too will benefit! The best way to know it, is by doing it-so we will experience basic pranayam or breathwork, kriyas or yogic sets, meditations, and mantras that can become a part of your own daily toolbox. Tools to release stress, to unlock creativity, and be your best YOU. Kundalini yoga is often called “the yoga of awareness,” as it is a journey of self-mastery and one that activates all the systems of the body.

We will enjoy the blessings of community-in a few group meditations and exercises, as well as the natural world-taking time by the ocean to practice a walking meditation. There will be a couple of brief writing and art exercises explored post-yoga sets as a tool for self-reflection and awareness. In this weekend retreat, you will get to know the other participants as we share in community. This will also be a time to slow down and listen to yourself in the beauty of the setting on the Washington Penninsula. There will be free time to explore, soak, relax, and enjoy on your own. All parts of the retreat classes are by choice-if you need to rest or skip anything that is just fine. You will leave with handouts and a personal recipe for your own personal practice, as well as a group 40-day sadhana to continue after if you choose.

Kundalini Yoga is a tool to experience your birthright to happiness and greatness as the human being that you are. “Great challenges come to Great people.” -YB

I hope to see you there! Sat Nam

Laurel Clohessy (Deshpal Kaur) grew up with Kundalini Yoga sprinkled throughout her early childhood. She returned to the arms of this practice following the birth of her oldest son. In 2005 Laurel studied with Gurmukh to become a certified Khalsa Way Prenatal teacher. In 2007, she completed the Radiant Child teacher training with Shakta Kaur, and in 2014 Laurel completed her Level 1 KYTT with Sevak Singh Khalsa. She has loved bringing these healing teachings to humans of all ages through the years in Montessori schools, University, birth centers, detention centers, and studios. Laurel is a Cornerstone Childbirth Educator, mother to two boys, educator, and lover of all things ginger. Laurel often incorporates poetry and dance movement into her all-levels classes. It is her joy to share these teachings with others, and she sees the powerful practice of Kundalini Yoga as a compass that can always point us forward, as well as return us to the happiest, truest Self. Laurel teaches currently in Portland, Oregon and is a transplant from Flagstaff, AZ.

INNER SPACE: Shamanic Hypnosis, Gathering Resources for Inner Healing @ Sou'wester Lodge and Vintage Travel Trailer Resort
Apr 1 @ 4:00 pm – Apr 3 @ 11:00 am

Spring 2020 Wellness Retreat Series

Shamanic Hypnosis / Gathering Resources for Inner Healing

with Mali Drexelius

This retreat will explore tools that can help us to navigate the subconscious mind and our innate ability to self-heal. We will be learning practices from shamanic, hypnotherapy, and sound healing modalities to allow us to move into different states of consciousness. In these altered states, we can make beneficial changes, get in touch with our highest wisdom, and clear old belief systems and patterns that are no longer serving us. During the workshop, we will meet with some of your healing guides, as well as be learning practices for deepening our connection with spirit and our inner knowing. Breakfast will be provided Thursday and Friday, as well as dinner Thursday evening.

Mali Drexelius stumbled into the mysterious world of shamanism in 2010, when she was seeking help for anxiety and depression that had plagued her for years. She was surprised to find that it helped immensely, and so embarked on a long journey to train and study under many gifted healers, offering perspectives and techniques from many traditions. A later search led to a different, yet similarly framed processes found in Western culture — Clinical Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Repatterning. The synthesis of these different schools of thought have allowed for a reconcile between the profound metaphysical experiences with her inclination towards science, reason, and the biology of brain and body.

At current, Mali has been blessed with the opportunity to teach and see clients both privately and in groups, with the understanding that she is always a student. It is her hope to pass along the knowledge and resources she’s collected along the way so others may also find access to their own innate healing and self-care. It is her intention to always have a beginners mind, to follow an inner guidance, and to honor and adapt these ancient techniques to deepen our understanding of consciousness for ourselves and our planet.

Spring 2020 Wellness Retreat Series

Inbodiment: Applying Energy Concepts to Release Tension with Dr Heidi Walrath

What stories are stuck in your body?

The “how to” look, listen and feel within.

led by Intuitive & Clairvoyant healer Dr. Heidi Walrath, DC

Inbodiment: is to inhabit. To bring into focus expressed curiosities and explore the expansivness within your own body’s vibration to gain tangible, sensory awareness of self-body.

This retreat is for those who wish to strengthen their ability to heal thy self.

Dr. Heidi will guide you through activities, movement, breath and meditation techniques that bring you into your body, as she accesses her intuitive and clairvoyant abilities to assist you in gaining firsthand experience with what YOU feel like. Learn how to discover your hidden stories and how to release your own pain and discomfort.

Dr. Heidi, DC BIO has always been curious. Guided by her strong inner voice, she has always listened.  When she was a child she had this feeling in her heart that lead her down the path. She started studying healing arts 20 years ago and fell in love with the idea that the body has many stories and that they could be accessed and healed. Sou’wester ARTS WEEK 2023
Mar 12 @ 3:00 pm – Mar 19 @ 11:00 am

4th Annual ARTS WEEK!

During Arts Week The Sou’wester hosts 30-35 artists and art collectives for a week of residency work culminating in a weekend (Friday and Saturday) of music, studio tours, performances and installations.

Over the past 9 years we have held an event around this time of year to highlight the creative process and the experiential nature of the Sou’wester Residency Program. Each year this event brings amazing artists to this neck of the woods and shines creative light into the darkest heart of winter.

The focus of Arts Week 2023 is SHIFTING CYCLES:

“Our reliance on a known occurrence has been disrupted. This shift is replacing existing patterns and problems. Collective action and individual insight paving our path forward.”

On the weekend, Friday and Saturday March 17th and 18th, 2023 the public will be invited, free and open to all, to tour the grounds and surrounding areas for a weekend full of installations, music, performances and open studios.

(The Sou’wester has regular residencies offered year-round in addition to residency events such as the annual ARTS WEEK. Applications for the Sou’wester Standard Residency are separate from ARTS WEEK and accepted on a rolling basis.)

Thank you to our Arts Week 2023 Sponsors!
